5. Adjust hypoid gear backlash (Fig.2.55). For new gears the new
backlash should initially be set at 0.38 mm (Fig.2.56).
The average backlash can be altered within the limit of
0.21 - 0.50 mm to obtain a correct contact pattern.
NOTE: Check the backlash in a minimum of 4 places in
correspondence to the spider’s arm to calculate the average value.
NOTE: Adjust the backlash by moving the gear only.

6. Using a suitable tool slacken or tighten the adjusting ring on
the drive gear side of the crown wheel and tighten or slacken
the adjusting ring on the opposite side by the same amount,
this will ensure the previously measured bearing cap
divergence, and therefore, bearing preload is maintained
(Fig.2.57).
7. Check the gear for run out (Fig.2.58). If run out exceeds 0.20
mm, remove the differential and check for the cause.
