Overview

The Mitutoyo Digimatic Micrometer is a precision measuring instrument designed for accurate external measurements. It features a digital display for easy reading and various functions to enhance usability and ensure measurement reliability.

Function Description

The core function of the Digimatic Micrometer is to provide precise measurements of external dimensions. It achieves this through an anvil and spindle mechanism, where the workpiece is placed between these two surfaces. The spindle's movement is then translated into a digital reading on the LCD display unit.

Key functions include:

  • ZERO/ABS Key: This key allows for two primary operations. A brief press sets the display to zero, enabling incremental measurements (indicated by "INC"). Pressing and holding the key for at least 2 seconds clears the "INC" display and shows the absolute length from the reference point (anvil measurement surface).
  • HOLD Key: A brief press of this key holds the current display value, indicated by "H" on the display. Pressing it again releases the held value. This is useful for recording measurements without having to remember the value immediately.
  • in/mm Key (in/mm Products Only): For models that support both metric and imperial units, this key toggles between inches ("in") and millimeters ("mm") with each press.
  • PRESET Key: This function is crucial for setting a reference point or registering specific gage dimensions. The micrometer allows for the registration of two preset values (P1 and P2). Users can input an arbitrary preset value, such as a standard bar dimension, to establish a known starting point for measurements. This is particularly useful for comparative measurements or when a non-zero starting point is required. The preset value can be adjusted digit by digit, and the display indicates which preset (P1 or P2) is active.
  • Function Lock Function: To prevent accidental changes to the reference point during measurement, the device includes a Function Lock. When activated, this function disables the PRESET, ZERO/ABS, and in/mm keys, leaving only the HOLD function enabled. This is indicated by a lock icon on the display. The lock is activated by pressing and holding the HOLD key, then additionally pressing and holding the ZERO/ABS key for at least 2 seconds. The same operation releases the lock.
  • Display Unit Angle Adjustment: The display unit can be rotated to an angle that is easy to read. It can be rotated up to 240° clockwise and 90° to the left, allowing for optimal viewing in various working positions.

Usage Features

The Digimatic Micrometer is designed with several features to ensure ease of use and accuracy in various applications:

  • Consistent Measuring Force: The device incorporates a ratchet stop mechanism to ensure a consistent measuring force is applied to the workpiece. This is critical for repeatable and accurate measurements, as applying too much or too little force can distort results. Users are instructed to turn the ratchet stop about three to five times after the measurement surfaces make light contact with the workpiece.
  • Interchangeable Anvil (340 Series Only): For the 340 series, the micrometer supports interchangeable anvils, allowing it to accommodate workpieces of different lengths. A conversion table is provided to guide users in selecting the appropriate anvil for their specific measuring range. The anvils are secured with a tightening screw, and proper alignment with the anvil bush marking is essential for accurate measurement.
  • Reference Point Setting: Before taking measurements, it is crucial to set a reference point. This involves cleaning the measurement surfaces and the gage, bringing them into light contact, applying the appropriate measuring force, and then using the PRESET key to register the desired value (zero or a specific gage dimension). The ability to register two preset values (P1 and P2) adds flexibility for different measurement scenarios.
  • Measurement Method: Users are advised to perform reference point setting prior to measurement. The spindle should be brought into slow contact with the workpiece to avoid deformation and ensure accurate results. The measurement surfaces should be brought into contact gradually and lightly, applying the appropriate measuring force in the same orientation and conditions as used for reference point setting.
  • External Output Function: The micrometer can output its display value to an external device via a connecting cable (optional accessory). This feature is useful for data logging, quality control systems, or integration with other measurement equipment. The connecting cable is installed by removing a connector cap and plugging in the cable.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is essential for the longevity and accuracy of the Digimatic Micrometer. The manual outlines several key maintenance practices:

  • Battery Installation and Replacement: The device uses SR44 button-type silver-oxide batteries. Users are instructed to install the batteries with the positive side facing up and to ensure the battery compartment cover is securely fastened. When replacing batteries, old ones should be removed first. Reinstalling batteries will erase any previously set PRESET values, requiring a new reference point setting.
  • Cleaning: After each use, the product should be cleaned to remove dust, cutting chips, and other debris. A soft cloth moistened with diluted neutral detergent can be used for cleaning. Organic solvents like thinner should be avoided as they can deform or malfunction the product. If the spindle becomes dirty, it should be wiped clean with a cloth containing a small amount of alcohol, followed by the application of micrometer oil.
  • Storage: When storing the micrometer, especially for three months or longer, the batteries should be removed to prevent liquid leakage that could damage the product. A gap of 0.2 to 2 mm should be left between the measurement surfaces, and the swivel clamp should be released. Applying micrometer oil to the spindle is recommended to prevent rust.
  • Handling Precautions: Users are warned against disassembling or modifying the product, applying excessive force, or subjecting it to sudden impacts. It should not be used or stored in places with sudden temperature changes, high humidity, or where it may contact water or oil. The sharp measuring faces should be handled with care.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common errors such as "Power Voltage Drop" (indicating low battery voltage, requiring battery replacement), "Counting Error" (due to excessive speed, noise, or sensor signal error, suggesting battery reinstallation or repair), and "Display Overflow" (when the display value exceeds the measurement range, requiring the thimble to be rotated in the opposite direction).
  • Off-Site Repairs: For more serious malfunctions like faulty spindle operations, inconsistent measured values due to burrs or nicks, or count value errors from internal sensor damage, off-site repairs are recommended. Users are advised to contact the agent where the product was purchased or a Mitutoyo sales representative.
