Overview

This document provides comprehensive installation and setup instructions for NetApp AFF A220 or FAS2700 systems, designed to guide users through the process from initial preparation to final configuration. It is structured into four main stages: "Prepare for installation," "Install hardware," "Cable storage," and "Complete system setup and configuration," ensuring a logical and step-by-step approach.

Function Description

The NetApp AFF A220 and FAS2700 systems are advanced storage solutions designed for data management and storage. These systems are capable of supporting both unified and Ethernet configurations, catering to diverse network environments. They can be deployed as standalone units or integrated with external storage shelves (specifically DS224C) to expand capacity and performance. The core function of these systems is to provide reliable, high-performance data storage, supporting various applications and workloads. The installation process involves setting up the physical hardware, connecting necessary cables for data and management, and then configuring the system software to create a functional storage cluster. The document emphasizes the importance of proper cabling for both switchless and switched cluster configurations, ensuring optimal data flow and redundancy.

Usage Features

The installation guide highlights several usage features that simplify the deployment and ongoing management of the NetApp AFF A220 and FAS2700 systems.

  • Pre-setup Guidance: Before any physical installation, users are directed to mysupport.netapp.com to create an account, download and install Active IQ Config Advisor, and register their system. This proactive step ensures that users have the necessary tools and support from the outset. The guide also advises unpacking all boxes, inventorying contents, and consulting the Hardware Universe for detailed cable information and part numbers. Furthermore, users are encouraged to visit the AFF and FAS System Documentation Center to download and complete the Cluster Configuration Worksheet and watch setup videos, providing a comprehensive preparatory phase.
  • Flexible Configuration Options: The systems support both "Unified configuration" and "Ethernet configuration," allowing users to choose the setup that best fits their existing network infrastructure. The document provides distinct cabling diagrams and instructions for each, ensuring clarity regardless of the chosen path.
  • Rack or Cabinet Installation: Detailed instructions are provided for installing the system in a rack or cabinet. This includes installing rail or telco tray kits, securing the system, attaching cable management devices to the back of each controller, and placing the bezel on the front. For cabinet installation, users are referred to the 42U 1280 mm System Cabinet Guide, ensuring proper physical integration.
  • Cable Management: The guide emphasizes proper cable management, instructing users to attach cable management devices and strap cables to the cable management arms (though not shown in detail, it's mentioned as a step). This helps maintain an organized and accessible setup, crucial for troubleshooting and future maintenance.
  • Power Cord Connection: Instructions for connecting both power cords to the power supplies are provided, including using retaining clips and connecting to different power sources for redundancy. A critical safety note advises against turning on the power supply switches until prompted, preventing premature power-up.
  • External Storage Integration: For systems with external storage (DS224C), the document provides specific cabling instructions for connecting shelf-to-shelf ports and connecting each node to IOM A and IOM B in the stack. This ensures proper communication and data path redundancy for expanded storage.
  • Initial Cluster Setup: The guide offers two options for initial cluster setup based on whether the user's laptop has network discovery enabled.
    • Network Discovery Enabled: Users connect their laptop to the Management switch and double-click either ONTAP icon to proceed. This simplifies the initial connection process.
    • Network Discovery Disabled: Users are instructed to set the console port on their laptop, connect to the micro-USB port on the controller with a console cable, connect the laptop to the Management switch, and assign a TCP/IP address. They then use a console session (e.g., PuTTY) to assign an initial node management IP address and open a browser to enter the management IP address for further configuration. This detailed approach ensures that even users without network discovery can successfully configure the system.
  • System Manager Guided Setup: After initial setup, users are directed to use System Manager Guided Setup to configure their cluster, streamlining the software configuration process.
  • Completing Setup: The final steps involve verifying system health using Config Advisor and then consulting the NetApp ONTAP Resources page for information on configuring additional features in ONTAP, ensuring a fully functional and optimized system.
  • Visual Aids: The document extensively uses illustrations and diagrams to depict cabling connections and hardware components, making it easier for users to follow instructions accurately. Attention is drawn to specific details like cable connector pull-tab orientation, which is crucial for correct and secure connections.

Maintenance Features

While primarily an installation guide, several aspects contribute to ease of maintenance:

  • Organized Cabling: The emphasis on cable management, including attaching cable management devices and strapping cables, contributes significantly to easier maintenance. A well-organized cabling system reduces the risk of accidental disconnections, simplifies troubleshooting, and makes it easier to identify and replace components if needed.
  • Clear Identification of Components: The document provides part numbers for various cables (Cluster Interconnect, 10 GbE network, Optical network, CAT6 RJ-45, mini-SAS HD, Ethernet, Power, micro USB console), which is invaluable for identifying and ordering replacement parts.
  • Troubleshooting Support: The initial step of downloading and installing Active IQ Config Advisor is a key maintenance feature. This tool helps verify the health of the system post-installation and can assist in diagnosing potential issues.
  • Documentation and Resources: Directing users to mysupport.netapp.com, the Hardware Universe, and the AFF and FAS System Documentation Center provides a centralized hub for ongoing support, documentation, and troubleshooting resources. This ensures that users have access to comprehensive information for any maintenance tasks.
  • Modular Design (Implied): The instructions for connecting various components like controller modules, external storage shelves, and different types of cables suggest a modular design. This modularity typically simplifies component replacement and upgrades, making maintenance more straightforward.
  • Safety Precautions: The "LIFTING HAZARD" warning and the instruction not to turn on power supply switches prematurely are critical safety features that protect both the user and the equipment during installation and subsequent maintenance.

In summary, this document serves as a robust guide for deploying NetApp AFF A220 and FAS2700 systems, integrating detailed instructions, visual aids, and references to external resources to ensure a smooth and successful installation and initial configuration. The emphasis on proper preparation, flexible configuration options, and clear step-by-step procedures makes it a valuable tool for users setting up these advanced storage solutions.
