Overview

This document is an owner's manual and installation instructions for E3 Series Downflow/Upflow Electric Furnaces, also referred to as Air Conditioner/Heat Pump Air Handlers. It provides comprehensive information for both users and qualified installers to ensure safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the appliance.

Function Description:

The E3 Electric furnace is designed for indoor installations, providing heating and, when paired with an optional coil, cooling capabilities for residential, mobile, modular, or manufactured structures. It can be configured for either upflow or downflow air distribution and is suitable for freestanding, closet, or alcove installations. The unit circulates air through a duct system, using electric heating elements for warmth and, with an air conditioning or heat pump coil, providing cooled air. The system is controlled by a 24 VAC thermostat, allowing users to set desired temperatures and fan modes (COOL, HEAT, AUTO, ON).

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual includes a "Unit Specifications" table (Table 6) and "Electrical Specifications" table (Table 7) for various E3EB furnace models (010H, 012H, 015H, 017H, 020H, 023H, and 023H 5-Ton).

  • Rated Heating Output (Btuh): Ranges from 35,000 Btuh (010H) to 75,000 Btuh (020H, 023H, 023H 5-Ton) at listed voltage. Output factors are provided for voltages other than 240V.
  • Watts (Total kW, Heating Elements & Blower): Ranges from 10.4 kW to 22.0 kW.
  • Supply Voltage: 240 Volts/60Hz/1-Phase for all models.
  • Heating Elements: Number of elements and total kW vary by model (e.g., 2 elements/10.0 kW for 010H, 4 elements/21.6 kW for 023H 5-Ton).
  • Blower Wheel Size: Primarily 10.5" Dia, 8" W, with the 023H 5-Ton model using an 11" Dia, 8" W blower.
  • Motor Speed, H.P. Rating, Amps: All models feature a 4-speed PSC motor. H.P. rating is 1/3 HP, 2.9 Amps for most models, and 3/4 HP, 3.8 Amps for the 023H 5-Ton.
  • Test ESP (in. w.c. Max): 0.3 for all models.
  • Optional Cooling/Heat Pump Availability: Most models support 2.0-4.0 Ton cooling/heat pump, while the 023H 5-Ton supports 2.0-5.0 Ton.
  • Air Filter (Standard): 16" x 20" x 1" (nominal).
  • Furnace Dimensions: Width-20" (508mm), Height-29" (737mm) (base height, actual height varies with return air grille, coil cabinet, and upflow stand), Depth-24 1/2" (623mm).
  • Electrical Specifications (Table 7): Provides "Supply Circuit," "Total Amperes," "Maximum Over-current Rating," and "Minimum Circuit Ampacity" for each model and configuration (Single or Dual "A"/"B" circuits). For example, the E3EB-010H Single circuit has 44.6 Total Amperes, 60 Max Over-current Rating, and 56 Min Circuit Ampacity.
  • Low Voltage Thermostat Wire Size: Specifies maximum wire lengths for 2-wire and 4+ wire systems based on wire gauge (e.g., 24 Ga. = 55' for 2-wire, 24 Ga. = 25' for 4+ wire).

Usage Features:

  • Thermostat Control: The unit is controlled by a 24 VAC thermostat. Users can select system modes (COOL, HEAT, AUTO, OFF) and fan modes (AUTO, ON).
  • Temperature Adjustment: A temperature selector allows users to set the desired comfort level. Small adjustments are recommended after the room temperature stabilizes.
  • Continuous Blower Operation: Setting the fan mode to "ON" circulates indoor air continuously, useful for equalizing temperature imbalances.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes critical safety warnings, including disconnecting electrical power before servicing, proper grounding, and avoiding storage of flammable materials near the furnace. It also warns against using a flood-damaged furnace.
  • Installation Flexibility: Approved for single/multistory residential or mobile/modular/manufactured structures in upflow, downflow, freestanding, closet, or alcove configurations.
  • Duct System Compatibility: Designed for use with a supply and return duct system, with specific requirements for duct materials, sealing, and sizing.
  • Filtering Methods: Detailed instructions for filtering methods in both downflow and upflow furnaces, for ducted and non-ducted return air systems, and with or without AC/HP coils or optional coil housings/upflow stands.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Maintenance: The furnace is supplied with a single air filter (16" x 20" x 1"). It is recommended to clean or replace the filter monthly, or more frequently in newly constructed homes. If a cooling coil is installed, coil filters are used instead of the furnace filter and should be removed, washed, and dried.
  • Blower Compartment Cleaning: Regular cleaning of the blower compartment is recommended to prevent dirt and lint accumulation, which can lead to excessive motor loads and reduced service life. The interior of the furnace cabinet, blower, and motor should be vacuumed or wiped clean.
  • Professional Servicing: All servicing other than normal maintenance should be performed by authorized, trained service personnel. Users are warned not to open the control panel.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A basic troubleshooting section helps users identify common issues (thermostat settings, tripped circuit breakers, dust accumulation, unit cleanliness) before calling a service technician.
  • Replacement Parts: Users are advised to specify the complete model and serial numbers when ordering replacement parts.
  • Blower Speed Adjustment: Instructions are provided for changing blower speeds for heating and cooling, noting that speeds are set inside the relay box if installed.
  • Pre-Start Checklist: For installers, a checklist ensures proper electrical connections, line voltage polarity, thermostat calibration, grounding, and heat anticipator setting before startup.
  • Installation Performance Checklist: A final checklist for installers to verify electrical system, combustion air & venting system, and confirm owner information review and literature placement.
