Overview

The iQ Drive Thermostat is a sophisticated wall-mounted controller designed to maintain optimal room temperature and humidity within a heating and air conditioning system. It is compatible with both conventional and iQ Drive components, offering a wide range of features to enhance comfort, save energy, and maximize system performance.

Function Description:

The primary function of the iQ Drive Thermostat is to control heating and cooling equipment to achieve and maintain desired indoor temperatures. It supports various operating modes, including AUTO, COOL, HEAT, and E-HEAT, allowing the system to adapt to different seasonal needs. In AUTO mode, the thermostat intelligently switches between heating and cooling to maintain a temperature within configured setpoints, preventing rapid changes with an adjustable auto changeover time. COOL mode activates cooling equipment like heat pumps or air conditioners during warmer periods, while HEAT mode engages heating equipment such as heat pumps, electric heaters, or gas furnaces in colder seasons. E-HEAT mode, specifically for heat pump systems, utilizes separate gas or electric heat exclusively, disabling heat pump operation.

Beyond temperature control, the thermostat also manages humidity levels. Its dehumidification mode actively removes moisture from the air, and it provides control output for an optional humidifier. This ensures a comfortable indoor environment by regulating both temperature and humidity.

The iQ Drive Thermostat can also serve as the primary controller for an iQ Zone system, which subdivides a home into multiple zones, each with its own thermostat. In such setups, the main iQ Drive Thermostat manages overall system operation, while individual zone thermostats handle local temperature and ventilation settings.

Usage Features:

The thermostat offers extensive customization for programming and operation. Users can set up program schedules for every day, weekdays, weekends, or individual days, with options for 2 or 4 events per day (WAKE, LEAVE, RETURN, SLEEP for 4 events; DAY, NIGHT for 2 events; or ACTIVE, IDLE for business settings). These schedules allow for temperature setbacks to optimize energy savings. For those who prefer manual control, a nonprogrammable option disables all schedules and holds, allowing the thermostat to function like a traditional rotary thermostat.

Temperature holds provide flexibility to override programmed schedules. Temporary holds adjust the setpoint until the next scheduled event, while permanent holds maintain a desired temperature indefinitely until canceled. A vacation hold allows users to set a specific temperature for an extended period, with an expiry date and time.

Fan operation is highly customizable. The default AUTO setting runs the fan only when heating or cooling is active, with a short run-on period afterward. The ON setting keeps the fan running continuously, with manually adjustable speeds. A unique "Intermittent Fan" feature allows the fan to run for up to 20 minutes and then turn off for up to 40 minutes if no heating or cooling is needed, which is useful for vacation or permanent hold settings. For iQ Zone systems, a ventilation speed setting is available to control fan speed when delivering air to specific zones.

The display is user-friendly, featuring a two-color backlight for easy viewing in low-light conditions. The backlight duration can be programmed for 30, 60, 90, 120 seconds, or set to remain ON continuously. The screen displays essential information such as indoor and outdoor temperatures, humidity, heating and cooling setpoints, fan setting, and the current operating mode. It also shows the date, day, time, and service alerts.

Navigation through menus and settings is intuitive, using five buttons to move up, down, right, left, and select options. Holding the up or down buttons for several seconds allows for larger incremental adjustments.

Maintenance Features:

The iQ Drive Thermostat incorporates several features to assist with system maintenance and diagnostics. On-board diagnostics alert users when service or maintenance is needed, displaying one-line descriptions of issues on the main screen. In case of extended or repeated problems, the screen will flash red, indicating a need for professional service.

The thermostat provides system maintenance reminders, such as "change air filter," "change UV lamp," "service air cleaner," or "service humidifier," helping homeowners keep their HVAC system in optimal condition.

The "Smart Recovery" feature enhances comfort by gradually adjusting indoor temperatures before a scheduled program change. This anticipates the upcoming setpoint, ensuring the room reaches the desired temperature by the start of the next time block.

"Offsets" allow for fine-tuning temperature and humidity readings to ensure they accurately reflect the living space. Users can adjust offsets for indoor temperature, remote temperature (not used with standard equipment), relative humidity, and heat anticipator (for conventional furnaces). These adjustments can compensate for factors like airflow, direct sunlight, or thermostat placement.

A "Security Lockout" feature prevents unauthorized changes to thermostat settings. It requires a 4-digit PIN to either lock the entire keypad or only allow temperature adjustments. This is particularly useful for maintaining desired settings in public or shared spaces. In case the PIN is forgotten, a master code (9999) can be entered to clear the lock and reset the PIN to 0000.

The thermostat does not require batteries, as settings are stored internally and retained even in the event of a power failure. This eliminates the need for periodic battery replacement and ensures continuous operation.
