OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
To Operate Your Air Conditioner for
Cooling —
1. Set the thermostat system switch to COOL
or AUTO and the thermostat fan switch to
AUTO. (See Figure 1)
2. Set the thermostat temperature to the
desired temperature level using the
temperature selector. Please refer to the
separate thermostat user’s manual for
complete instructions regarding ther-
mostat programming. The outdoor unit
and indoor blower will both cycle on and
off to maintain the indoor temperature at
the desired cooling level.

Overview

This document provides installation and operation instructions for an Outdoor Air Conditioner, specifically a 13+ SEER Extra High Efficiency Split System.

Function Description:

The device is an outdoor air conditioner unit designed for cooling. It operates as part of a split system, meaning it works in conjunction with an indoor unit. The system uses refrigerant to transfer heat, providing cooling to the indoor space. The unit is designed for high efficiency (13+ SEER).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Efficiency: 13+ SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) Extra High Efficiency.
  • Refrigerant: The manual includes charging charts for R-22 refrigerant for both ZRKA and CRK7 compressors, indicating that R-22 is the specified refrigerant.
  • Compressor Types: The system can be equipped with ZRKA or CRK7 compressors, as evidenced by the specific charging charts provided for each type.
  • Tonnage: Charging charts are provided for various tonnage units, including 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 5.0 ton systems.
  • Electrical: The unit requires a 24VAC control circuit. The manual specifies checking for low pilot voltage at the compressor contactor coil and notes that a control circuit voltage below 17VAC is considered low voltage. The outdoor unit requires a power supply, and the manual details checks for the outdoor unit power disconnect, compressor circuit breaker/fuses, and wiring.
  • Temperature Scales: The thermostat uses temperature scales to set and display desired temperatures.
  • Pressure Readings: Refrigerant charging charts list pressures in psig (pounds per square inch gauge) and temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit (°F).

Usage Features:

  • Thermostat Control: The system is controlled by a thermostat, which allows users to set the desired temperature. The thermostat has switches for COOL (cooling mode) and AUTO (automatic operation), as well as a fan switch for ON (continuous fan operation) or AUTO (fan operates only when cooling).
  • Indoor Blower Operation: The indoor blower can be set to ON for continuous operation or AUTO, where it cycles with the outdoor unit and indoor blower.
  • Temperature Selection: Users can set the desired temperature using the thermostat. The manual emphasizes referring to the separate thermostat user's manual for complete instructions regarding thermostat programming.
  • Diagnostic LEDs: The unit is equipped with diagnostic LEDs (Green "POWER," Red "TRIP," Yellow "ALERT" with flash codes 1-9) that provide visual indications of the system's status and potential issues. These LEDs help in troubleshooting by indicating conditions such as compressor protector open, low refrigerant charge, high head pressure, short cycling, locked rotor, open circuits, welded contactor, and low voltage.
  • Refrigerant Charging Charts: The manual provides detailed charts for charging the system with R-22 refrigerant based on outdoor temperature, suction pressure, and discharge pressure for various tonnage units and compressor types (ZRKA and CRK7). TXV (Thermostatic Expansion Valve) refrigerant charging charts are also included, showing liquid pressure versus liquid temperature, with instructions to "Remove refrigerant when above curve" and "Add refrigerant when below curve."

Maintenance Features:

  • Air Filter Maintenance: Regular cleaning or replacement of the indoor air filter is crucial for efficient operation and to prevent accumulation of dirt and debris on the indoor coil.
  • Outdoor Coil Cleaning: The outdoor coil should be kept clean from leaves, grass clippings, and other debris to ensure proper airflow and heat exchange.
  • Obstruction Checks: Users should check for any obstruction, such as twigs or sticks, that could impede airflow around the unit.
  • Condensate Drain Maintenance: The condensate drain should be checked periodically to ensure it is free from obstructions and draining properly.
  • Electrical Connections: All electrical connections should be checked for tightness and proper insulation.
  • Refrigerant Level Checks: The manual provides detailed refrigerant charging charts and instructions for adjusting refrigerant levels based on pressure and temperature readings. It also specifies the system charge in ounces for different tonnage units.
  • Oil Level Check: For locked rotor conditions, the manual suggests measuring the compressor oil level.
  • Service Technician: The manual advises that certain tasks, such as checking for refrigerant leaks, replacing components, and performing detailed electrical checks, should be performed by a qualified service technician. It also states that the homeowner should not attempt to install and/or service this equipment, as failure to comply could result in equipment damage, personal injury, or death.
  • Installation Site Preparation: Instructions for unpacking, inspecting for damage, and selecting a proper slab mount location are provided.
  • Refrigerant Line Sizing: The manual specifies minimum and maximum interconnecting refrigerant line lengths and vertical elevation differences.
  • Brazing Operations: Safety measures for brazing operations, including wearing safety glasses, work gloves, and having a fire extinguisher, are emphasized.
  • Electrical Wiring: Detailed instructions for field connections and compliance with national and local electrical codes (ANSI/NFPA 70) are provided.
  • Functional Checkout: A checklist for functional checkout includes verifying thermostat function, indoor blower operation, and positive temperature coefficient resistor (PTCR) status.
  • Diagnostic Module: The Comfort Alert™ Diagnostics Module is a monitoring device that provides real-time protection and troubleshooting information through LED flash codes. It detects abnormal system conditions and helps identify root causes of problems.
  • Refrigerant Charging Adjustment: Instructions for adjusting refrigerant charge are provided, with specific guidance for factory-installed modules and field-installed modules.
  • Optional Equipment: The manual mentions optional equipment such as liquid line solenoid valves and crankcase heaters, and provides instructions for their installation and connection.
