Overview

The OMRON E3X-N Auto-Tuning Fiber-Optic Sensor is a high-performance DC amplifier designed for precise sensing applications, featuring a pushbutton sensitivity adjustment for enhanced ease of use and reliability. This sensor is engineered to offer superior performance compared to standard amplifiers, boasting a sensing distance that can be up to 100% longer.

Function Description

The E3X-N operates as a fiber-optic amplifier, detecting objects by processing light signals transmitted and received through connected fiber-optic cables. Its core function revolves around its auto-tuning capability, which allows for pushbutton sensitivity adjustment. This feature simplifies the setup process and ensures optimal performance across various sensing conditions. Users can choose between single-channel or four-channel models, providing flexibility for different application requirements. The four-channel models are particularly efficient, as they integrate four amplifiers into a single housing, significantly saving space and reducing wiring complexity. This design also allows for the direct mounting of four fiber-optic cables next to each other without mutual interference, a crucial advantage in compact or dense installations.

The sensor supports various teaching methods to optimize sensitivity for specific tasks. These include:

  • Maximum Sensitivity Setting: This method is used when the highest possible sensitivity is required, such as for detecting the existence of objects that perfectly interrupt light or for applications with no background objects. The sensor is shipped with maximum sensitivity pre-set, but it can be reset by following a specific procedure involving the mode selector and teaching button. When set to maximum sensitivity, the sensor automatically adjusts regardless of the set distances of the fibers or light.
  • With/Without-Object Teaching: This method is ideal for applications requiring the detection of slight differences in reflection, color discrimination, or when dealing with background objects that have unstable reflection or object surface irregularities. It involves locating a sensing target in the sensing area, pressing the teaching button, moving the object, and pressing the button again to set the sensitivity based on both the presence and absence of the object.
  • No-Object Teaching: This method is suitable for scenarios where teaching is impossible by stopping the movement of sensing objects, or for detecting bright or dark objects by teaching only with background objects. It involves pressing the teaching button without a sensing object in the area, allowing the sensor to learn the background conditions. For dark objects in front of bright backgrounds, the operation mode selector can be set to D. ON.

The E3X-N also incorporates an initial operating level compensation function, particularly useful in no-object teaching with through-beam (Dark-ON) or reflective (Light-ON) fiber cables. This function helps maintain stable operation by compensating for factors like optical axis divergence or dust on lenses, sampling light values from initial objects to set an optimal operating level.

A remote teaching function is available for initial teaching, offering an alternative to pressing the teaching button directly. This is achieved by providing specific signal conditions to a remote teaching input, simplifying setup in hard-to-reach locations.

For the E3X-NM (four-channel models), a timer set function allows users to configure an off-delay timer, providing additional control over output timing.

Usage Features

The E3X-N is designed for user-friendliness and adaptability. Its compact housing, with widths of 32 mm and 10 mm, makes it suitable for installations where space is a premium. The ability to choose between single and four-channel models offers scalability, allowing users to select the most appropriate configuration for their needs.

The pushbutton sensitivity adjustment is a key feature, simplifying the setup process. Instead of complex manual adjustments, users can achieve optimal sensitivity with a simple button press, reducing installation time and potential for error. The sensor's high-performance DC amplifier ensures reliable detection, even in challenging environments.

The mutual interference protection function, especially in the E3X-NM four-channel models, allows for the close connection of multiple fiber units without signal disruption, which is critical for dense sensing arrays.

The optical axis adjustment (flashing function) aids in aligning fiber cables for maximum gain. By setting the mode selector to TEACH, the sensor activates a flashing function and a built-in buzzer to indicate when optical axes are divergent, guiding the user to achieve optimal alignment.

Maintenance Features

Maintenance of the E3X-N is made easier primarily through its pushbutton sensitivity adjustment. This feature allows for quick re-calibration or fine-tuning of sensitivity, which can be necessary due to environmental changes, dust accumulation on fiber ends, or slight shifts in object position. The ability to easily adjust sensitivity helps maintain consistent performance over time without requiring extensive technical expertise or specialized tools.

The design also considers ease of fiber cable installation and disconnection. The snap-locking system allows for straightforward connection and removal of fiber-optic cables. For disconnection, users can remove the protective cover, raise the lock lever (for E3X-NT) or press the lock button (for E3X-NM), and then pull out the fiber. This mechanism helps prevent damage to the fiber or the amplifier during maintenance.

Protective covers are available as accessories (E39-G8 for E3X-NT and E39-G9 for E3X-NM) to shield the amplifier from environmental factors, contributing to its longevity and reducing the need for frequent cleaning or repair.

The device also includes circuit protection features such as output short circuit protection and DC power reverse polarity protection, which safeguard the unit from common electrical faults, thereby reducing potential downtime and repair costs. Indicators (red/green LED, orange LED, and buzzer) provide clear feedback on operation, stability, and teaching status, aiding in troubleshooting and ensuring correct functionality.

In summary, the OMRON E3X-N Auto-Tuning Fiber-Optic Sensor combines high performance with user-friendly features and robust design, making it a versatile and reliable solution for a wide range of sensing applications.
