Omron E3Z-LS Distance-settable Photoelectric Sensor

The Omron E3Z-LS is a compact, distance-settable photoelectric sensor designed for reliable object detection across various industrial applications. It offers both background suppression (BGS) and foreground suppression (FGS) modes, allowing for flexible detection regardless of background or foreground conditions.

Function Description

The E3Z-LS sensor operates by emitting a red light beam (680 nm) and detecting the reflected light from an object. Its distance-settable feature allows users to define a specific detection range, ensuring that only objects within that range are detected, while ignoring those outside it.

Background Suppression (BGS) Mode: In BGS mode, the sensor detects objects within a set distance while ignoring any background objects beyond that distance, such as conveyors or walls. This mode is ideal for applications where the background is fixed and needs to be ignored. The hysteresis in BGS mode is 10% or less, enabling the detection of small steps, with a minimum detectable step thickness of 4 mm at a set distance of 40 mm.

Foreground Suppression (FGS) Mode: In FGS mode, the sensor detects objects that are closer than a set distance, ignoring objects beyond that point. This mode is particularly useful for detecting glossy or uneven objects, as the sensor's output (ON/OFF) is determined by whether an object is present or if reflected light is not returned to the sensor. This makes it reliable for applications where the background might be reflective or inconsistent. The VERY FAR region is supported only for FGS, and the incident light level threshold is fixed and cannot be set in this region.

The sensor minimizes the influence of external interference, such as inverter fluorescent lighting, through a unique avoidance algorithm. A red beam is used for easy spot position confirmation, simplifying installation and alignment. The E3Z-LS also boasts almost no differences in detection distances for different colors, ensuring consistent performance across various object types.

Usage Features

Compact Size: The E3Z-LS maintains the same compact size as the E3Z Series, allowing for the use of existing mounting brackets, simplifying integration into existing systems.

Easy Spot Position Confirmation: The red light beam makes it easy to confirm the sensing spot position, aiding in quick and accurate installation.

Minimal Hysteresis: With minimal hysteresis (10% or less), the sensor can reliably detect small steps and subtle changes in object presence, crucial for precision applications.

Flexible Connection Options: Available with pre-wired 2-meter or 0.5-meter cables, or M8 connectors, offering flexibility in wiring and installation.

BGS/FGS Selectable: The ability to switch between background and foreground suppression modes via a selection switch or wiring allows the sensor to adapt to diverse detection requirements and object characteristics.

Output Status Indicators: Operation (orange) and stability (green) indicators provide visual feedback on the sensor's status, aiding in setup and troubleshooting. The stability indicator lights up when the detection/no detection status is stable within the rated ambient operating temperature.

Mounting Flexibility: The sensor can be mounted in various orientations. For glossy surfaces, inclining the sensor by 5° to 10° can improve detection reliability. When mounting near mirror-like objects, inclining or separating the sensor is recommended to prevent unstable operation.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning: To clean the surface of the product, never use paint thinners or other organic solvents, as these can damage the material.

Durability: The sensor is designed with a high degree of protection (IP67) against dust and water, contributing to its longevity in harsh industrial environments.

Robust Construction: Made from durable materials like PBT and denaturated polyallylate, ensuring resistance to wear and tear.

Wiring Precautions:

  • Always ensure the power supply voltage is within the rated range to prevent damage.
  • Avoid short-circuiting the load.
  • Do not connect power supply without a load connected.
  • For optimal performance and to avoid malfunctions, especially with inverters or servomotors, ensure proper grounding of FG (frame ground) and G (ground) terminals.

Mounting Precautions:

  • Avoid mounting sensors face-to-face to prevent mutual interference.
  • Install the sensor carefully to prevent direct exposure to intensive light sources like sunlight or fluorescent light.
  • Do not strike the sensor with a hammer or other tools during installation, as this can compromise its water-resistive properties.
  • Use M3 screws for mounting, ensuring the tightening torque does not exceed 0.54 N-m.
  • For M8 connectors, always turn off the power supply before connecting or disconnecting. Hold the connector cover to connect or disconnect, and secure it by hand without using pliers to prevent damage. Ensure the connector is securely connected to maintain protection and prevent disconnection due to vibration.
