GENERATOR TROUBLESHOOTING
This troubleshooting guide provides solutions to many common generator problems. Figure
8-1
shows the
location
of
the generator components. Refer to the wiring diagrams/schematics in Section
11
to locate ter-
minal connections. If these suggestions do not help, contact an authorized Onan service representative.

Trouble
No AC Output
Voltage
Note: This
condition may
cause the
generator set
to stop when
start switch S 1
is released.
Possible Cause
1. Open circuit breaker.
2. Open circuit between voltage
regulator and brush block.
3. Open circuit between generator
windings
(01,
02)
and voltage
regulator.
4.
Open circuit between terminal
block
TB1
and voltage regulator;
wiring harness
J4
leads.
5.
Brushes stuck in holder
or
not
making good contact with slip
rings.
6. Defective voltage regulator.
7.
Open, grounded,
or
short circuit
in rotor
or
stator.
Corrective Action
1 . Locate cause of overload and correct
as required. Reset breaker.
2.
Check for good wiring connections
and correct as required. Check for
continuity and correct
if
circuit is open.
3. Check for good wiring connections
and correct as required. Check for
continuity and correct
if
circuit is open.
4. Check for good wiring connections
and correct as required. Check for
continuity and correct
if
circuit is open.
5.
If there are 12
or
more volts
on the brush block while cranking,
then release brushes if jammed
in holder, and clean slip rings
if
dirty. If not, the problem is in the
control or wiring harness.
6. Replace voltage regulator.
7.
Test each component for open,
grounded, or shorted windings and
replace
if
defective.
