DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES
5.1 Error Symptom R

Er
ro
rs
tha
t
occur
because
of
the wrong
operating
procedure,
wrong
programming,
or
use
of
a defective diskette, or
soft
erro
rs
due
to
external
causes, such
as
contaminated
air and
random
electrical noise, are
often
attributed
to
a drive
failure
or
maladjus
tment.

the

defect, always confirm errors with another good
diskette, and another known good

Soft
E
rror
D
etectio
n
and

orrectio
n
Soft errors are normally caused by
th
e following:
(1) Contamination between read
I write heads and diskette.
This
kind of cont.}:,lination can be easily ehminated
by
the liner
in
the

e.
(2)
Random

ect

ic
al noise, normally a f
ew

or
less.
(3)
Small
defects
in

data

nd
l or

aulty
grounding
of
the

soft

ro
r.
(5) Wrong
motor

peed

another
cause
of
soft errors.
Take the
following

ep

on
the
controller
side
to
recover from
the
soft
errors
ment
ioned above.
(1) Read
the
track again
ten
tim
es
or
unt
il
th
e
data
is
recover
ed
.
(2)
If
Step
(1) above fails
to
recover
the
data
, access the
adjacent.
Then
return
the
head
to
the
origin
al
track.
(3) Repe
at
Step
(11
.
(4) Any
error
that
cannot
be
corrected
by
th
e above
procedure
is irrecoverable.
