Basic Principles of Operation

Filtration - How Your Filter Works

Explains how dirty water enters, passes through sand, and clean water exits.

Backwash

Explains reversing water flow to remove dirt and debris from the filter bed.

Installation and Assembly

Receiving and Inspecting

Upon receipt, check filter pallet(s) and cartons for damage, notify carrier if damaged.

Locating the Filter

Position filter on a permanent level slab, ensuring visibility of controls and access for servicing.

Setting Anchor Bolts

Mark holes for anchors on slab, install anchors per manufacturer's specifications.

Install All Piping

Install piping for proper filtration and backwash, dry fit first. Support piping with bracing and hangers.

Inspection of Components

Check laterals, diffusers, and couplings for loose, damaged, or missing parts. Replace if necessary.

Pressure Test System

Test system with water, check for leaks at 50 psi max. Do not use air or gas for testing.

Start-up and Operation

Media Installation

Consult Appendix B for media specs. Install gravel and sand media layers as instructed.

Backwash System

Backwash each tank for at least 5 minutes until wastewater runs clear. Ensure adequate flow rate.

Return Filters to Normal Filtration Mode

Run system in normal mode. Check for sand return to pool; if present, turn off immediately.

Maintenance

Periodic Backwash

Backwash when pressure increases by 10 psi over clean filter pressure, or on a time schedule.

Periodic Inspection of Filters

Inspect media bed for levelness and signs of erosion. Check tanks for leaks and system parameters.

Draining the Filters

Shut down system, isolate water, remove drain cap, and open air relief to drain tank. Prevent vacuum condition.

Installation/Removal of Manway Cover

Drain tanks, remove yoke bolts, rotate and remove cover. Clean surfaces and reinstall correctly.

Removal of Sand Media

Remove media if contaminated or for repairs. Drain tanks, remove cover, and carefully remove media.

Winterizing the Filter Tanks

Backwash, drain tanks, shut off power, loosen flanges, and store caps to prevent damage from freezing.
