4. GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION
4.1 General description
The ICM-2000 is an instrument for measuring the gas equilibrium pressure and liquid
temperature in filled bottles or cans. After measuring the temperature the CO
2
content (based
on the two measured values) can be determined with the Haffmans CO
2
scale,
The ICM-2000 can be used in laboratories or other locations where measurement of the CO
2
content in filled bottles or cans is desired.
The ICM-2000 is a modular design, built of corrosion-resistant materials such as RVS and high-
quality plastics. Special attention has been paid to the instrument’s ergonomics and user-
friendliness.
4.2 Measuring principle ICM-2000
CO
2
measurement is based on Henry’s law, which applies to a state of equilibrium between gas
and liquid in an enclosed space. The law states that at a certain temperature, the quantity of
gas dissolved in a liquid is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above the liquid.
4.3 IAM
The IAM is an instrument for measuring the air content in filled bottles or cans. The following
measurements can be carried out using the IAM in combination with the ICM-2000:
Air content of headspace.
Total air quantity.
4.4 Measuring principle IAM
The measuring principle is based on the absorption of CO
2
in lye. The gas slowly released from
a bottle or can via the ICM-2000 (via the needle valve) gradually percolates through the lye in
the IAM. The CO
2
is absorbed and the remaining gas, usually a mixture of N
2
and O
2
, is
collected in the measuring burette.
The amount of gas, expressed in ml, can be seen on the measuring burette after the liquid
levels in both tubes have been equalised using the levelling vessel, thereby eliminating the
influence of the hydrostatic pressure.
