Overview

This manual describes the Pentair SuperFlo VST, SuperFlo VS, and Sta-Rite SuperMax VS Variable Speed Pumps, designed for various in-ground pool applications. These pumps are built with a thick-walled body, a permanent magnet motor, and advanced hydraulic engineering, ensuring durability and reliable service for pools, spas, water features, or fountains.

Function Description

The Pentair variable speed pumps are designed to circulate water in swimming pools, spas, and water features efficiently. They feature a premium efficiency variable frequency drive that allows for flexible motor speed and duration settings. The pump operates at speeds ranging from 450 to 3450 RPM and is compatible with 115-230 Vrms nominal input power at either 50 or 60Hz. The primary function is to maintain a sanitary environment while minimizing energy consumption by running at the lowest necessary speeds. Optimal programming considers factors such as pool size, additional water features, chemical usage, and local environmental conditions.

The pump can be controlled either through its integrated keypad or externally via digital inputs or an RS-485 connection to a Pentair control system. When external controls are connected, the pump prioritizes commands in the following order: RS-485 > Digital Inputs > Drive Programmed Schedule.

Usage Features

  • Quiet Operation: The pumps are designed for extremely quiet operation.
  • Unionized Fittings: Equipped with 1.5" and 2" unionized fittings for easy replacement.
  • See-Through Strainer Pot Lid: Allows for quick visual inspection of the strainer basket.
  • Self-Priming: Features a self-priming mode for quick and easy start-up.
  • Simple User Interface: The pump includes a straightforward keypad for programming and control.
  • UV and Rain-Proof Enclosure: Designed for outdoor installation with protection against environmental elements.
  • Onboard Time of Day Schedule: Allows users to program operational schedules directly on the pump.
  • Adjustable Priming Mode: The priming speed and duration can be customized.
  • Programmable Quick Clean Mode: A dedicated mode for temporary high-speed cleaning cycles.
  • Pump Alarm Display and Retention: Displays and retains alarm information for troubleshooting.
  • Auto Power Limiting Protection Circuit: Protects the pump from power fluctuations.
  • 24-Hour Clock Retention: Maintains time settings during power outages.
  • Keypad Lockout Mode: Prevents unintended changes to pump settings.

External Control Options:

The pump supports external control via:

  • Digital Inputs: Using either the Digital Input Wiring Kit (P/N 353129Z - Almond) or the RS-485 Automation Wiring Kit (P/N 356324Z - Black). This allows for trigger signals to initiate specific pump functions (SPEED 1, SPEED 2, SPEED 3, QUICK CLEAN).
  • RS-485 Connection: For SuperFlo VST and SuperMax VS pumps manufactured after 10/15/20, an RS-485 connection with the RS-485 Automation Wiring Kit (P/N 356324Z - Black) allows control by most Pentair control systems. The pump address and other settings can be programmed from the pump's keypad.

Programming and Operation:

  • Setting the Clock and Pump Address: The internal clock must be set for custom schedules to function. The pump address can be assigned for RS-485 control.
  • Default Schedule: A pre-programmed schedule provides sufficient daily turnover for a typical pool, running at different speeds and durations throughout the day.
  • Custom Schedules: Users can program up to three custom speeds with specific start times and durations. Speeds can range from 450 to 3450 RPM.
  • Quick Clean: A temporary override function that runs the pump at a programmed speed and duration for quick cleaning. The speed and duration for Quick Clean can be adjusted and saved.
  • Priming: The pump automatically primes at start-up (default 3450 RPM for 5 minutes). Priming speed can be adjusted, or the feature can be disabled if controlled by an external system.
  • Speed Priorities: When programming schedule durations, SPEED 1 has the highest priority, followed by SPEED 2, and then SPEED 3. The total duration of all programmed speeds cannot exceed 24 hours.
  • Keypad Lockout: This mode prevents accidental changes to pump settings, though the Display, Start/Stop, and Quick Clean buttons remain functional for specific actions.
  • Factory Reset: Resets all programmed settings and schedules to factory defaults, except for the time of day.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning the Pump Strainer Basket: Regular inspection and cleaning of the strainer basket (at least once a week) are crucial for maintaining filter and heater efficiency and preventing motor stress. The process involves stopping the pump, relieving pressure, removing the lid, cleaning the basket, and ensuring the lid O-ring is clean and lubricated before reassembly.
  • Motor Care:
    • Protection from Heat: The motor should be shaded from direct sunlight, and any enclosure must be well-ventilated to prevent overheating.
    • Protection from Dirt: Prevent foreign matter from accumulating on or near the motor. Avoid storing or spilling chemicals near the motor. Keep the motor fan cover clear of dirt and debris.
    • Protection from Moisture: Protect the motor from splashing water and extreme weather. If motor internals become wet, they should be allowed to dry before operation.
  • Pump Disassembly (for servicing): The manual provides detailed instructions for disassembling the pump, including removing the strainer pot, diffuser, impeller, and seal plate. This is necessary for tasks like shaft seal replacement or clearing impeller blockages.
  • Shaft Seal Replacement: Step-by-step instructions are provided for replacing the two halves of the shaft seal (rotating spring seal and fixed ceramic seal), emphasizing careful handling to avoid damage.
  • Pump Reassembly: Instructions guide the user through reassembling the pump after servicing, including securing components and ensuring proper O-ring placement.
  • Restarting the Pump: After maintenance, the pump must be primed by filling the strainer pot with water and bleeding air from the filtration system before normal operation resumes.
  • Troubleshooting Chart: A comprehensive chart helps diagnose common problems such as pump failure, reduced capacity, pump not starting, pump stopping, or noisy operation, providing possible causes and corrective actions.
  • Alarms and Fault Codes: The pump displays specific fault codes for various issues, such as communication link loss, overcurrent, voltage issues, and motor start failures. The manual provides descriptions and corrective actions for these codes.
