a.
To
test brush holders, touch one test probe
to
the brush plate and the other
to
each brush holder.
b.
The test lamp should light when the grounded brush holders are touched and should
not
light
when the insulated brush holders are touched.

ASSEMBLY.
a.
When assembling the starting
motor
always use an arbor press and the proper bearing arbor for
installing graphitized bronze bearings.
b.
Soak new absorbent bronze bearings in SAE 20 oil before installation. Saturate the felt oiling pad
in the commutator end head with SAE 20 oil. Allow excess oil
to
drain
out
before installing end head
on
motor. Put a light film
of
Lubriplate 777
on
the drive end
of
the
armature shaft before and after installing
the
drive end head.
c.
New brushes should be properly seated when installing by wrapping a strip
of
00
sandpaper
around the
commutator
(with the sanding side
out)
1-1/4 to 1-1/2 times maximum. Drop brushes on
sandpaper covered commutator and
tum
the armature slowly in the direction
of
rotation. Dust should be
blown
out
of
the
motor
after sanding.

NOTE
The spring tension
is
32
to
40
ounces with new brushes. This
tension
is
measured with the scale hooked under the brush spring
near the brush and the reading
is
taken at right angles
to
the line
of
force exerted by the brush spring.
