SHIFT LINKAGE
INSPECTION/ADJUSTMENT
Linkage rod adjustment is necessary when symptoms
include:
S No All Wheel Drive light
S Noise on deceleration
S Inability to engage a gear
S Excessive gear clash (noise)
S Shift selectors moving out of desired
range
NOTE: Remove necessary components to gain
access to shift linkage cable ends (i.e. exhaust heat
shield, exhaust pipe, etc.).
1. Inspect shift linkage cable, clevis pins, and pivot
bushings and replace if worn or damaged.
2. Be sure idle speed is adjusted properly.
3. Place gear selector in neutral. Make sure the
transmission bell crank is engaged in the neutral
position detents.
4. With two wrenches loosen the outside jam nut
counterclockwise. Turn the outside jam nut 1 1/2
turns. Perform this procedure on the shift lever
end, also.

5. After turning the outside jam nut 1 1/2 turns. Hold
the outside jam nut with a wrench and tighten the
inside jam nut clockwise, until it is tight against the
bracket.
6. Repeat Step 4 and Step 5 until the proper
adjustment
is made for the transmission cable.
7. Use this procedure to loosen or tighten the shift
linkage cable as needed.
