Overview

This document is a user guide for the FunSicle SkimmerPlus Filter Pump, designed to maintain clean pool water. It provides comprehensive instructions for setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The FunSicle SkimmerPlus Filter Pump is an electrical device designed for filtering water in storable pools. It integrates a skimmer function to collect debris from the water surface and a filter pump to circulate and clean the pool water. The pump is equipped with a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) for safety, which may include a timer function for scheduled operation. It is crucial for maintaining water clarity and is part of a larger system that requires proper chemical balance (chlorine and pH levels) to prevent algae growth.

Important Technical Specifications:

The filter pump models covered are SFX600, SFX1000, and SFX1500, all operating at 120V~60Hz.

  • SFX600: 1.7 Amps
  • SFX1000: 1.4 Amps
  • SFX1500: 3.1 Amps All units require a minimum of 105VAC to start and run properly. The pump is double insulated and grounded. It is designed for use with storable pools only, not permanently-installed pools. The electrical components must be installed in accordance with Article 680 of the 2017 National Electrical Code® (NEC®) or its latest approved edition, and any state or local codes. The pool must be installed no closer than 6 feet (1.83 m) from any electrical outlet, and portable appliances should not be placed closer than 5 feet (1.5 m) to the pool. The pump is protected by a thermal switch that stops operation if it overheats, preventing damage and prolonging its service life.

Usage Features:

The setup process involves installing the skimmer, return fitting, and the pump itself. The skimmer canister is inserted through the pool's skimmer opening and secured with a skimmer seal ring, ensuring the pool liner is tight against the gasket. The return fitting is assembled and installed outside the pool wall, with the RF Diverter twisted to optimize water circulation away from the skimmer opening. The weir pins are snapped into the pivot slots inside the skimmer canister, allowing the weir to stand upright.

For operation, the pump should be plugged into a grounded receptacle at least 15 feet (4.5 m) away from the pool. If equipped with a GFCI power cord set, it includes a pre-set timer function. The default operating time is 10 hours, after which the pump automatically turns off for 14 hours, completing a 24-hour cycle. The operating time can be adjusted from 1 to 10 hours using the "SET" button, with each press adjusting the time by 1 hour. Pressing "SET" when the display shows "0" (off mode) will restart the pump, adjusting the pre-set time by 1 hour from the previous setting. The "TEST" button on the GFCI plug interrupts power to test its leakage protection function, and the "RESET" button restores power. The water level in the pool should be maintained between the MIN and MAX markings inside the skimmer canister. The pump should not be used to dispense powdered chlorine, shock treatment, or other chemicals as this can damage the pump, filter cartridge, and pool.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the pump's efficiency and the pool's cleanliness.

  • Daily Checks: Check pump output daily for reduced water flow, and inspect the pump, hoses, and fittings for leaks.
  • Filter Cartridge Care: The filter cartridge (Type D for SFX600, Type A/C for SFX1000/SFX1500) needs regular cleaning. To clean, turn off and unplug the pump, slide open the top cover, remove the strainer basket and filter cartridge. Pressure wash the cartridge thoroughly with a garden hose, allow it to dry, and gently brush away dirt. Avoid scrubbing the pleats to prevent wear. The filter cartridge should be cleaned daily and replaced when required. It is recommended to keep a spare cartridge on hand.
  • Chemical Treatment: Suntan oils, body oils, and algae can clog the cartridge. To remove oils, soak the cartridge in a solution of 1 pound of tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) and 5 gallons of water for 12 hours. For oils and algae, add ½ pint of pool chlorine or 1 pint of liquid household bleach to the solution one hour before removing the cartridge. Rinse thoroughly before reuse. Excessive calcium or mineral deposits require specialized treatment from a local pool supplies store.
  • Pool Water Chemistry: It is essential to check and adjust pH and chlorine levels daily. Recommended pH is between 7.3 and 7.8, and chlorine level between 1.0 and 1.6 ppm. Superchlorinate the pool every other week. Hot weather or heavy use may require higher chemical levels and weekly superchlorination. Using a pool cover can help maintain pH and chlorine levels. High chlorine concentration or low pH can damage the pool liner. Never drop chemical lumps or pellets directly into the pool.
  • Cleaning the Pool: Regularly clean the pool using a maintenance kit with a vacuum. A foot bath before entering the pool helps keep it clean. Avoid using well water without professional advice on chemical additives.
  • Pump Motor Care: The pump motor is protected by a thermal switch that stops it if it overheats. If the pump turns off automatically, check the pool water temperature and water flow. Allow the motor to cool for at least 15 minutes, after which it should restart automatically. If the GFCI plug shows "0", press "SET" to restart. If it turns off again, inspect for rotor blockage.
  • Disassembly and Storage: For disassembling and storing the pump, turn it off and unplug it. Disassemble the return fittings by loosening hose clamps, detaching the hose, and draining water. Clean and dry all parts, and lubricate gaskets with petroleum jelly before reassembling. Disassemble the pump by removing the top cover, strainer basket, filter cartridge, and weir. Clean and dry all parts, lubricate the skimmer gasket rubber seal with petroleum jelly, and reassemble. Remove the motor assembly by unscrewing the motor seal nut, clean and dry it. Store all parts in a dry place above 32°F (0°C).
  • Servicing the Pump: For troubleshooting or replacing the pump, drain the water level below the skimmer opening. The motor assembly can be removed by first turning off and unplugging the pump, removing the top cover, strainer basket, and filter cartridge. Then, at the return fitting, unscrew and remove the RF Locking Ring and RF Diverter, insert the service plug to block water flow, loosen the hose clamp, detach the hose, and drain water. Unscrew the skimmer seal ring to remove the entire filtration system. Flip the canister upside down, unscrew the motor seal nut, and take out the motor assembly. Alternatively, if leaving the system attached to the pool, block water flow at the return fitting and skimmer seal ring, then collect water under the skimmer, remove filter components, and with two people, unscrew the motor seal nut while holding the water stopper and skimmer canister. Carefully remove the motor assembly, ensuring not to lose the rubber nozzle or canister gasket. Inspect the rotor assembly for damage; if parts are broken, a new rotor assembly can be purchased. When reassembling, ensure the canister gasket is correctly inserted, the motor assembly is aligned, and the motor seal nut is tightened counterclockwise without cross-threading.
