explosion, electric shock, or engine starting unexpectedly. Always disconnect the cables from the
battery before performing maintenance, service, installation, and engine disassembly.
STANDARD PRACTICES AND PROCEDURES
When installing or removing the motor, follow these guidelines:
• Disconnect the engine from its battery.
• Do not use the main engine battery to power the engine.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BATTERIES
• Use a 12 V deep cycle marine battery. The number of batteries required depends on the engine model. See Battery
connection.
• As a rule, deep cycle batteries with high ampere-hour capacity or reserve capacity provide longer runtime and
better performance.
• Install a manual reset circuit breaker in the motor circuit, in the positive line, no more than 180 cm (72 in) from the
battery.
• Do not extend the included Size 10 battery cables more than 1.8m 6ft, to a maximum length of more than 3m 10ft. If
longer battery cables are required.
• Use self-locking nuts with a nylon insert to secure the battery cables to the terminals. Using wing nuts to secure the
battery cables can loosen the connections.
• Any sounders or fish finders must be powered from the engine starting battery. Connecting electrical devices to the
engine's batteries may cause electrical noise and possible electrolysis.
BATTERY PRECAUTIONS
The battery produces gas during operation and charging, which may ignite and explode, spraying
sulfuric acid onto its surroundings, which may result in severe burns. The area around the battery
must be ventilated, and protective clothing must be worn during handling.
When changing batteries, a flammable gas mixture forms in each cell. Some of these gases escape through the vent
holes in the caps and may form an explosive atmosphere around the battery if the ventilation is poor. This explosive
gas can remain in or around the battery for several hours after it is charged. Sparks or flames can ignite the gas and
cause an internal explosion which can destroy the battery.
To avoid an explosion, take the following preventive measures:
1. Do not smoke near batteries that are being charged or which have been charged.
2. Do not break live circuits connected to the battery terminals, as a spark usually appears at the site of a broken
circuit. Always be careful when connecting or disconnecting the cable clamps on the chargers. Poor
connections are a common cause of an electric arc that causes an explosion.
