The body has two different types of nerve fiber:
a) Unmyelinated nerve fibers with continuous,
slow relaying of stimuli
b) Myelinated nerve fibers with saltatory,
fast relaying of stimuli
MOTOR (myelinated)
NERVE FIBERS (skeletal muscles)
Up to 10 Hz Single twitches
10 – 20 Hz Fibrillations
20 – 80 Hz Tetanic contractions
above 90 Hz Muscle waves
AUTONOMIC (unmyelinated)
NERVE FIBERS (smooth musculature, organs)
Below 10 Hz Stimulation of the vascular muscles
10 – 20 Hz Stimulation of the intestinal muscles*
* smooth musculature (muscles of the internal organs,
deep lying – involuntarily contracting muscles)
