Some chemicals used can be potentially hazardous, and can cause injury or illness.
• Read and understand the Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) provided by the chemical manufacturer before

• Minimize contact with and inhalation of chemicals. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment
when handling chemicals (e.g., safety glasses, gloves, clothing). For additional safety guidelines, con-

• Do not leave chemical containers open.
• Check regularly for chemical leaks or spills. If a leak or spill occurs, follow the manufacturer's cleanup
procedures as recommended by the SDS.

handling and disposal.
Chemical Waste Hazards

The manual is available from the U.S. Government Printing Office or online at
http://www.cdc.gov/biosafety/publications/bmbl5/.
Depending on the samples used, the capillary cartridge and plate may constitute a bio-
hazard. Dispose of the cartridge and plate in accordance with good laboratory practices
and local, state/provincial and national environmental and health regulations.
