BACKLAPPING
The keen edges of the spiral cutters can be
maintained by backlapping. With the units in the
lowered position proceed as follows:
1. Smear the edges of the spiral cutters with a
medium grade of carborundum paste.*
2. Ensure that the parking brake is applied.
3. Sit in the driving seat and start the engine.
4. Set the throttle control lever to give
maximum engine r.p.m. Adjust cylinder speed
control to give a cylinder speed of
approximately 200 r.p.m. (Full speed is
approximately 1000r.p.m.).
5. Set the hydraulic drive lever into the up
position for reverse drive and depress the mow
foot switch, the cutting cylinders will run in
reverse.
6. Continue to run for a few minutes then stop the
engine to check and adjust the cutting cylinder
to the bottom blade.
7. If the cylinders require further backlapping,
repeat operations 3,4,5,and 6 until the edges
are completely sharp.
*Obtainable from most motor accessory shops
or garages.
NOTE: Even badly dulled edges are usually
resharpened after 10 minutes treatment.
After backlapping is completed, clean off all
traces of carborundum paste from the bottom
blades and spiral cutters. It is essential that this
is done thoroughly otherwise the cutting
cylinders and bottom blades will quickly lose
their effectiveness when they are rotating
normally for grass cutting.
