consideranumberoffactors.
AntennamountingandEMEexposure
Ensurethattheantennaisconnectedtotheradio
beforetransmission.
RaymarinedeclaresaMaximumPermissibleExposure
(MPE)radiusof1.5metres(4.9ft)(perOETBulletin
65)forthissystem,assuming25wattsoutputtoan
omnidirectionalantennaof3dBigainorless.
Forwatercraftwithsuitablestructures,theantenna
basemustbeatleast3.5metres(11.5ft)abovethe
maindecktomeettheMPEforpersonsupto2metres
(6.6ft)tall.Forwatercraftwithoutsuchstructures,the
antennamustbemountedsothatitsbaseisaminimum
of1.5metres(4.9ft)verticallyfromheadsofallpersons.
Theantennamustbeisolatedfromthevessel’s
metalworkusinganinsulated(e.g.plastic)mounting
bracket.
Compasssafedistance
Topreventpotentialinterferencewiththevessel's
magneticcompasses,ensureanadequatedistanceis
maintainedfromtheproduct.
Whenchoosingasuitablelocationfortheproductyou
shouldaimtomaintainthemaximumpossibledistance
fromanycompasses.Typicallythisdistanceshouldbe
atleast1m(3ft)inalldirections.Howeverforsome
smallervesselsitmaynotbepossibletolocatethe
productthisfarawayfromacompass.Inthissituation,
whenchoosingtheinstallationlocationforyourproduct,
ensurethatthecompassisnotaffectedbytheproduct
whenitisinapoweredstate.
GPSlocationrequirements
Inadditiontogeneralguidelinesconcerningthe
locationofmarineelectronics,thereareanumber
ofenvironmentalfactorstoconsiderwheninstalling
equipmentwithaninternalGPSantenna.
Mountinglocation
AboveDecksmounting:
ProvidesoptimalGPSperformance.(Forequipment
withappropriatewaterproofrating.)
BelowDecksmounting:
GPSperformancemaybelesseffectiveandmay
requireanexternalGPSantennamountedabove
decks.

signal.BeforelocatingequipmentwithaninternalGPS
antennabelowdecks,seekprofessionalassistance
andconsideruseofanexternalGPSantennamounted
abovedecks.
Prevailingconditions
Theweatherandlocationofthevesselcanaffectthe
GPSperformance.Typicallycalmclearconditions
provideforamoreaccurateGPSx.Vesselsat
extremenortherlyorsoutherlylatitudesmayalso
receiveaweakerGPSsignal.GPSantennamounted
belowdeckswillbemoresusceptibletoperformance
issuesrelatedtotheprevailingconditions.
