Chapter 5
DIESEL SYSTEM
Diesel engines use many fuel system components which
are similar to gasoline systems. The major difference in
the two systems is that with diesel you do not have the
vapor and therefore the explosive characteristics of the
gas system. Diesel systems use return lines which send back
unused fuel to the tank for reuse.
DIESEL FILTERS
Many vessels use a special filter that separates water from
diesel fuel and holds it in the bottom of the fuel filter.
Normally these fuel filters feature a drain plug that can be
loosened and drained to eliminate the impurities. Be sure
to dispose of these materials properly. Unlike gas filters
these filters use a glass bowl that can be visually inspected
on a periodic maintenance schedule.
DIESEL TRANSFER PUMP
A fuel transfer pump is included within the diesel fuel
system. The pump equalizes the volume of fuel between
the two fuel tanks. The pump is located in the bilge. The
fuel transfer pump is located near the helm seat or dash
area.
The transfer pump utilizes a three position, center off
style switch. The dash breaker must be energized to activate
the switch. Once activated press the fuel transfer switch
toward the fuel tank you want the fuel to flow toward.
Monitor the fuel gauges and continue to transfer fuel until
the tanks are equalized.
