152 Driving and operating
9 Danger
Plugging the cord into an ungroun‐
ded outlet could cause an electri‐
cal shock.
Also, the wrong kind of extension
cord could overheat and cause
a fire. You could be seriously in‐
jured.
Plug the cord into a properly
grounded three-prong AC outlet.
If the cord will not reach, use
a heavy-duty three-prong exten‐
sion cord rated for at least 15
amps.
5. Before starting the engine, unplug
the cord connection and store the
cord in the load compartment.
The length of time the heater should
remain plugged in depends on sev‐
eral factors. Ask a dealer in the area
where you will be parking the vehicle
for the best advice on this.
Hints on Ethanol E85 fuel 3 172.
Parking
■ Do not park the vehicle on an easily
ignitable surface. The high temper‐
ature of the exhaust system could
ignite the surface.
■ Always apply the electric parking
brake.
■ If the vehicle is on a level surface or
uphill slope, set the gear shift lever
to P before switching off the engine.
On an uphill slope, turn the front
wheels away from the curb.
If the vehicle is on a downhill slope,
set the gear shift lever to P before
switching off the engine. Turn the
front wheels toward the curb.
■ Lock the vehicle and activate the
anti-theft alarm system.
Notice
In the event of an accident with air‐
bag deployment the engine is turned
off automatically, if the vehicle is
coming to a stillstand within a certain
time.
Engine exhaust
9 Danger
Engine exhaust gases contain poi‐
sonous carbon monoxide, which is
colorless and odorless and could
be fatal if inhaled.
Open the windows if exhaust
gases penetrate the vehicle inte‐
rior. Have the cause of the fault re‐
medied by a workshop.
Avoid driving with an open tail‐
gate. Otherwise, exhaust gases
could enter the vehicle.
Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter reduces the
amount of harmful substances in the
exhaust gases.
