208 Vehicle care
9 Warning
Poorly maintained and improperly
used tires are dangerous.
Overinflating your tires could
cause overheating from too
much friction. You could have
a blowout and a serious acci‐
dent.
Underinflated tires pose the
same danger as overinflated
tires. The resulting accident
could cause serious injury.
Check all tires frequently to
maintain the recommended
pressure. Tire pressure should
be checked when your tires are
cold.
Overinflated tires are more likely
to be cut, punctured or broken
by a sudden impact - such as
when you hit a pothole. Keep
tires at the recommended pres‐
sure.
Worn, old tires could cause ac‐
cidents. Replace your tires if the
tread is badly worn or if they
have been damaged.
High speed operation
9 Warning
Driving at high speeds, 100 mph or
higher, puts an additional strain on
tires. Prolonged high-speed driv‐
ing causes excessive heat build-
up and could cause sudden tire
failure. You could have a collision
and you or others could be killed.
Some high-speed rated tires re‐
quire inflation pressure adjust‐
ment for high-speed operation.
When speed limits and road con‐
ditions are such that a vehicle can
be driven at high speeds, make
sure the tires are rated for high-
speed operation, are in excellent
condition, and are set to the cor‐
rect cold tire inflation pressure for
the vehicle load.
If you'll be driving at high speeds,
speeds of 100 mph or higher, where
it is legal, set the cold inflation pres‐
sure to the maximum inflation pres‐
sure shown on the tire sidewall, or to
35 psi, whichever is lower. See the
