Decarbonizing the exhaust muffle

When
dealing
with
complaints
and
repairs,
th
e
following
should
be
bo
rne
in
mind:
In
every
engi
ne
a
propor
tion
of
the
l
ubrication
oil
is
burnt
and
form
s
carbon
wh
ich,
in a
two-stroke
engine,
is
deposited
chi
ef
ly
on
the
pi
ston
crown
, in
th
e
tran
s
fer
port
of
the
cylinder
a
nd
in
the
exhaust
muffler
. T
he
carbon
should
be
removed
after
every
200
running
hours,
at
the
latest
when
t
he
e
ngine
perf
o
rmance
drops
or
when,
even
with
c
orrect
carburettor
se
tti
n
g,
the
engi
ne
tends
to
fo
u
r-stroke
.

The

Carbon
deposi
ts
may
be
burnt
off
by
heating
the
muffler
to
red
heat
by
means of a
welding
torch
or
in a
forge
f ire.

alteration

Mod
ifi
cations
of
a
ny
kind
to
the ex
hau
st mu
ffler
are
in
any
case
illega
l
and
constitu
te
a
puni

habl
e
offence
.
Cylinder
head
Unscrew
the
cylind
er
head
and
remove
the
carbon
deposits
fr
om
the
insid
e
of
the
comb
ustion
chamber
w
it
h a
screwdr
iver. Take
care
not
to
da
mag
e
th
e
su
rf
ace
of
the
chamber
.
Cylinder
por
ts
Place
piston
at
bottom
dead
center
.
Remove
carbon
deposits
in
ex
hau
st
port
and t
ransfer
po
rts
with
a
screwdriver
.
Caref
ully
plac
e
pi
ston
at
top
dead
ce
nt
er
and
remove
loos
e
carbon
.
Piston
Carefu
lly
remove
o
nly
the
thick
er
ca
rbon
deposits
(f
la
kes)
fro
m
the
pi
st
on
crown
.
Do
not
try
to
scrape
the
piston
crow
n
to
a
br
ig
ht
meta
lli
c
condit
ion
.
