Overview

The SDC Z7835 PRO SERIES is a 12VDC mortise lockset designed for security door applications, offering both locked outside and inside functionality. This device is an electrified lockset, meaning it integrates with access control systems (ACS) for enhanced security and operational flexibility.

Function Description:

The Z7835 PRO SERIES mortise lockset provides secure locking for doors, with the ability to be locked from both the outside and inside. Its electrified nature allows for remote control and integration with various access control components such as door position sensors (DPS), request-to-exit (REX) devices, and latch status (LS) indicators. The lockset supports both fail-secure and fail-safe configurations, which are critical for determining the lock's behavior during a power failure. In a fail-secure setup, the door remains locked when power is lost, ensuring security. In a fail-safe setup, the door unlocks when power is lost, which is often required for egress in emergency situations.

The lockset operates with a latchbolt mechanism, which can be handed (changed from LH to LHR or RH to RHR) to match the door's swing direction. This adaptability ensures proper installation and function regardless of the door's orientation. The system includes provisions for key cylinder installation, allowing for mechanical override or entry using a physical key. It is compatible with standard straight cam ILCO (863G) or ILCO (863M) Schlage "L" cam key cylinders.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Requirement: 12VDC. This is a crucial specification for power supply compatibility and ensures the lockset can be integrated into standard low-voltage security systems.
  • Lockset Type: Mortise lockset. This indicates that the lock mechanism is installed within a mortised pocket in the door edge, providing a robust and concealed installation.
  • Locking Configuration: Locked Outside / Inside. This refers to the ability to secure the door from both sides.
  • Fail-Secure/Fail-Safe Options: The wiring diagram clearly shows separate connections for fail-secure and fail-safe operations, allowing installers to choose the appropriate mode based on building codes and security requirements.
  • Solenoid Connections: The lockset utilizes both outside and inside solenoids for electrified control. For fail-secure, the outside solenoid is controlled by RED (+) and WHITE (-) wires, and the inside solenoid by BLACK (+) and GREEN (-) wires. For fail-safe, the outside solenoid uses VIOLET (+) and GREY (-) wires, and the inside solenoid uses RED (+) and PINK (-) wires.
  • Connector Types: The system uses 4-pin and 10-pin connectors for wiring, simplifying installation and ensuring proper connections.
  • MOV Protection: The instructions emphasize installing a MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) across each coil to protect ACS electronics. This is a critical electrical protection measure to prevent damage from voltage spikes.
  • Door Preparation Dimensions:
    • Face Plate Recess: L 8-1/32" x W 1-5/16" x D 7/32".
    • Strike Recess: 5/32" deep for flush fit.
    • Strike Holes: 1" diameter, 1-1/8" deep.
    • Distance between lock centerline and strike centerline: 3/8".
  • Key Cylinder Compatibility: Standard straight cam ILCO (863G) or ILCO (863M) Schlage "L" cam.
  • Optional Accessories: SDC Door Core Drill Guide Kit (P/N: 7000-DGK) is suggested for wood doors to facilitate wire raceway creation.

Usage Features:

  • Versatile Trim Options: The lockset supports different trim types, including Rose Lever Trim and Escutcheon Lever Trim, allowing for aesthetic customization to match various door designs.
  • Handing Reversibility: The latchbolt handing can be easily changed by removing a fixing screw, pulling out the latchbolt, turning it 180 degrees, and re-fastening it. This feature makes the lockset adaptable to different door swings (LH, LHR, RH, RHR) without requiring separate models.
  • Integration with Access Control Systems: The detailed wiring diagrams for both typical (no options) and optional wiring (with DPS, REX, LS) highlight its capability to integrate seamlessly with comprehensive access control solutions.
  • Door Position Sensor (DPS): Provides feedback on whether the door is open or closed (GREEN N/C, BLACK N/C, WHITE N/O, ORANGE COM).
  • Request-to-Exit (REX): Allows for a controlled exit from the secured area (BROWN N/C, YELLOW N/O, RED/YELLOW N/O).
  • Latch Status (LS): Indicates the state of the latchbolt (RED/BLACK for latched extended, RED/GREEN for unlatched retracted). These features provide real-time status updates to the access control system, enhancing monitoring and control capabilities.
  • Spanner Wrench: A spanner wrench is supplied for tightening the inside lever onto the mounting plate, ensuring a secure and stable installation of the trim.

Maintenance Features:

  • Modular Design: The lockset components, such as the latchbolt, solenoids, and trim assemblies, appear to be designed for relatively straightforward installation and replacement, which can simplify maintenance.
  • Clear Wiring Diagrams: The comprehensive wiring diagrams are essential for troubleshooting and maintenance, allowing technicians to quickly identify and address electrical issues.
  • MOV Protection: The recommended MOV installation helps protect the lockset's internal electronics and connected ACS components from electrical surges, potentially reducing the need for repairs due to power fluctuations.
  • Adjustable Components: The ability to change the latchbolt handing on-site reduces the need to stock multiple versions of the lockset, simplifying inventory management for maintenance providers.
  • Key Cylinder Access: The design allows for easy installation and tightening of the key cylinder, which is a common maintenance task for mechanical override components. The set screw against the cylinder ensures it remains securely in place.
