Overview

The UM12 is an ultrasonic sensor designed for non-contact detection and distance measurement. It is suitable for a wide range of applications due to its robust design and various output configurations.

Function Description

The UM12 ultrasonic sensor operates by emitting ultrasonic waves and measuring the time it takes for the waves to return after reflecting off an object. This time-of-flight measurement allows the sensor to determine the distance to the object. The sensor can be configured for different output types, including digital outputs (PNP/NPN), digital outputs with IO-Link, and analog outputs (voltage or current).

Digital Output: The digital output can be configured for single-point switching (DtO) or window mode. In DtO mode, the output activates when an object is detected below a taught-in switching point. An additional DtO + 8% mode can be configured, where the switching point is set at the taught-in distance plus 8%. In window mode, the output activates when an object is located within a defined switching window. The digital output can also be adjusted for N/C (normally closed) or N/O (normally open) contact.

Analog Output: The analog output provides a continuous signal (voltage or current) proportional to the measured distance. It can be scaled by teaching in close and distant sensor scaling limits. The output characteristic can be set to rising (minimum to maximum operating range) or falling.

IO-Link: Certain UM12 models support IO-Link communication, allowing for the exchange of process data and parameters with a suitable IO-Link master. This enables advanced configuration and diagnostic capabilities. A sensor-specific device description file (IODD) is required for IO-Link integration.

Temperature Compensation: The device features internal temperature compensation to ensure optimal operating performance. It reaches its optimal operating point after approximately 1 minute of uptime. The temperature compensation is factory calibrated for standard mounting conditions but can automatically recalibrate for specific installation situations, especially when high measurement accuracy is required. Automatic calibration occurs when the device is in a cold state, and the digital output is deactivated for about 30 minutes, or the analog output delivers a constant value for about 30 minutes. If the measured value changes during this period, calibration is aborted, and previous parameters are retained.

Usage Features

  • Mounting: The sensor should be mounted on conductive metal surfaces, and proper grounding is essential. Observe mounting distances to prevent interference, especially when using multiple devices. The device can be aligned for smooth or rough surfaces, with recommended angles of ≤ 90° ± 3° for smooth surfaces and ≥ 90° ± 3° for rough surfaces relative to the sensor axis and object surface.
  • Electrical Installation: Connect cables in a de-energized state. Ensure the supply voltage is within specifications. Proper grounding is crucial to prevent equipotential bonding currents, which can cause dangerous voltages, device malfunction, or cable damage. Shielded cables are recommended for connection to peripheral devices.
  • Teach-in Functionality: The sensor offers intuitive teach-in procedures for both digital and analog outputs.
    • Digital Output Teach-in:
      • Single Point (DtO) or Single Point + 8%: Position the object, apply L+ at Teach-in for 3 seconds until both LEDs flash alternately, then apply L+ for 1 second (for DtO) or 3 seconds (for DtO + 8%) until LEDs flash alternately again.
      • Switching Window: Teach in the close and distant switching points by applying L+ at Teach-in for 3 seconds until LEDs flash alternately, then applying L+ again for 1 second.
      • Background (ObSB): Teach in the background by applying L+ at Teach-in for 3 seconds until LEDs flash alternately, then applying L+ for 10 seconds until LEDs stop flashing.
    • Analog Output Teach-in:
      • Scaling: Position an object at the close scaling limit, apply L+ at MF for 3 seconds until LEDs flash alternately. Then, position an object at the distant scaling limit and apply L+ at MF for 1 second.
      • Rising/Falling Characteristic: Apply L+ at MF for 13 seconds until LEDs flash alternately. Apply L+ at MF for 1 second to toggle between rising (Orange LED lights up) and falling (Orange LED does not light up).
  • Factory Reset: The device can be reset to factory settings by switching off the supply voltage, applying L+ at Teach-in, switching on the supply voltage, waiting 13 seconds until LEDs flash alternately, and then separating L+ within 5 seconds.
  • SOPAS ET: The SICK SOPAS ET engineering tool can be used for parameterization and diagnostics, requiring a connection cable and the device description file.
