Overview

The Siemens Climatix ECO Economizer Controller, available in models POL224.00, POL224.00/M24, and POL224.05, is designed to optimize building cooling and indoor air quality by leveraging unconditioned outside air. This controller integrates with a variety of sensors, damper actuators, thermostats, fans, and compressors to achieve efficient economizer operation.

Function Description

The core function of the Climatix ECO controller is to implement free cooling strategies. It can base its free cooling decisions on single or dual dry bulb temperatures, or a combination of temperature and humidity sensors, allowing for flexible and precise control based on ambient conditions. The controller supports automatic switch-over between different control modes, adapting its operation to changing environmental demands.

For enhanced accuracy and ease of setup, the Climatix ECO allows for parameter settings to be configured based on the climate zone. This is facilitated by GPS functionality integrated into the Climatix Mobile application, which helps tailor the controller's behavior to specific geographical and climatic requirements.

The controller provides clear LED indications to show its operational status, including free cooling operation, sensor activity, and damper operation, offering at-a-glance feedback on the system's performance.

Communication capabilities are robust, featuring an RS485 port for integration with BACnet MSTP or Modbus RTU subordinate devices, enabling seamless interaction within larger building management systems. A USB interface is included for firmware updates and WLAN connection, facilitating easy maintenance and system upgrades. QR codes are also provided for quick access to download the Climatix Mobile application and user documentation, streamlining the setup and information retrieval process.

The Climatix ECO controller is equipped with a comprehensive set of inputs and outputs to manage various HVAC components. It features 7 analog inputs, 2 analog outputs, 5 digital inputs, and 4 digital outputs. These inputs can accommodate flexible sensor types, including Type II NTC 10K or 0-10 Vdc standard sensors, as well as Siemens QFM2160U or QFR9530 combination temperature/humidity sensors for enthalpy control. This versatility allows for precise monitoring of outdoor air temperature (OAT), return air temperature (RAT), outdoor air humidity (OAH), return air humidity (RAH), mixed air temperature (MAT), and auxiliary analog inputs (AUX-AI), including air quality or pressure sensors.

The digital inputs are designed to receive 24Vac signals for various indications such as occupancy, 3-stage cooling stage input, shutdown commands, conventional heat, heat pump changeover (HP(B)/HP(O)), or preoccupancy. This allows the controller to respond dynamically to different operational demands and safety protocols.

The 24Vac relay outputs provide digital control for 3-stage cooling stage output, exhaust fan operation, VFD On/Off (Variable Speed Supply Fan Enable), system alarm output (compliant with Title 24), or Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV). The analog outputs are used for 2-10 Vdc damper actuators and 0-10 Vdc VFDs, providing proportional control over these critical components. An additional analog input is available for actuator feedback (ACT-FB).

The controller also incorporates essential protective features, including frost protection to prevent damage in cold conditions, fault detection and alarming to alert users to system issues, and brownout protection to safeguard against power fluctuations.

Usage Features

The Climatix ECO controller is designed for quick installation and easy commissioning, particularly when used with the Climatix Mobile application. This mobile application simplifies the setup process, allowing users to configure the device efficiently.

For direct interaction, the POL224.00 model includes an inbuilt Human Machine Interface (HMI) with an LCD display and three operation buttons. This user interface supports normal operation, parameter setup, and alarm notifications, providing a local control option when a mobile application is not connected. The LCD displays one line of information, and the buttons (Up, Down, Enter) allow users to navigate menus, edit values, confirm selections, and jump between categories.

Commissioning can be performed either through the Climatix Mobile application or directly via the controller's HMI in Configuration State. The three LEDs (Free Cooling, Sensor, DAC) blink yellow when the controller enters Configuration State, providing a visual cue. The HMI allows users to access the '5CONFIG STATE' screen, confirm the switch, configure I/Os, and test connected devices. Once configurations are complete, users can switch back to the '8RUN STATE' to resume normal operation.

The Climatix Mobile application, downloadable via QR codes on the device, enables customers to perform operations from their smartphones or tablets. For mobile application operations, a WLAN stick must be plugged into the USB port to establish a connection between the mobile device and the controller.

Users can modify basic settings such as temperature shutoff setpoint, enthalpy shutoff setpoint (if an RH input is detected), mixed-air temperature modulating setpoint, ppm value for Demand Control Ventilation (DCV), damper minimum position, temperature unit, fan airflow or CFM value, ERV outside air temperature setpoint, and exhaust fan startup setpoint. Advanced settings can also be adjusted, including damper position anti-freeze protection, damper position during shutdown, highest stage cooling delay time, and minimum/maximum leaving air temperature. Calibration values for sensors and anti-freeze protection settings can also be configured.

Maintenance Features

The USB interface on the Climatix ECO controller is primarily used for firmware updates, ensuring the device can be kept up-to-date with the latest software enhancements and bug fixes. This interface also facilitates WLAN connection for commissioning with the Climatix Mobile application.

The LED indications serve as a diagnostic tool, providing immediate feedback on the controller's status and any detected issues. Different colors and blinking patterns signify various states, such as commissioning mode (yellow blinking), power start-up (yellow on), free cooling running (green on), free cooling available but not running (green blinking), not economizing when it should (red blinking), economizing when it should not (red on), and sensors working okay (green on).

In the event of errors, the LEDs provide specific indications: humidity sensor error (yellow on), CO2 sensor error (LED off), air temperature failure/fault (red on), excess outdoor air (red blinking), damper working okay (green on), damper stalled (red on), damper slippage (red blinking), actuator alarm reported (fast red blinking), and terminal ACT-FB configured but no feedback signal (LED off). The controller prioritizes LED indications for multiple simultaneous faults, with red (fast blinking) having the highest priority, followed by red (on, steady), red (blinking), yellow, off, and green. This hierarchical display helps in quickly identifying the most critical issues.

The device is designed for easy mounting to sheet metal ductwork. Mounting instructions emphasize positioning the controller to allow sufficient clearance for wiring, servicing, and removal. For the POL224.05 model, four spacers and M3.5 screws are required, while the POL224.00 model requires two No. 6 3/4" self-tapping screws. Siemens does not provide these mounting accessories, requiring them to be obtained separately.

All relevant documentation, including mounting instructions, application manuals, CE declarations, RCM conformity, and product environmental declarations, can be downloaded from the Siemens US Download Center, providing comprehensive resources for installation, operation, and troubleshooting.

For disposal, the device is considered electronic waste and must be disposed of through designated channels, complying with all local and currently applicable laws and regulations. The device also utilizes Open Source Software (OSS), and information regarding these components, including copyrights and licensing agreements, is available for download.
