Overview

The Smarty Micro Tuner model S-67 is a performance tuning device designed for Common Rail Dodge Ram trucks equipped with 6.7L, 24 Valve Cummins Diesel Engines. It functions as a micro tuner, allowing users to modify the engine's performance characteristics by updating its Electronic Control Module (ECM) software. The device is intended for off-road use only, and users are cautioned that its use may invalidate vehicle warranties.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Smarty S-67 is to reprogram the vehicle's ECM with different "CaTCHER" software versions, each offering varying levels of performance. It allows users to:

  • Update ECM Software: Program the ECM with one of ten available CaTCHER software versions (numbered 0-9) to enhance engine performance. It also allows returning the ECM to its original STOCK software.
  • Adjust Optional Parameters: Customize various engine parameters such as speed limiter, torque, injection timing, rail pressure, and variable geometry turbo settings. These adjustments can be made before programming the ECM.
  • Read and Clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The device can read and display stored DTCs from the ECM and also clear them. This feature is for convenience, and MADS makes no warranty regarding the accuracy of interpretations.
  • ABS Update (Tire Height Adjustment): Once the Smarty is VIN# locked to a vehicle (meaning a CaTCHER software has been loaded), the speedometer can be adjusted to account for changes in tire height (from 25.00” to 45.00” in 0.05" increments).
  • Power on Demand (PoD): For models prior to MY 2010, this feature allows users to instantly select a preferred power level (0-99) even while driving.
  • Read Key-on Counter: Displays the number of times the ignition key has been turned on.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Compatibility: Specifically designed for Common Rail Dodge Ram 6.7L, 24 Valve Cummins Diesel Engines.
  • Connectivity: Features a USB connector for connecting to a personal computer for updates and a 15-pin connector for connecting to the vehicle's OBD II diagnostic port.
  • Keyboard: Composed of 12 keys: numerical keys (0-9) for selecting options and entering values, a right arrow key ('>') to confirm operations, and a left arrow key ('<') to go back one step.
  • Display: Features a display that shows firmware version, tuning data version, menu options, error messages, and programming progress.
  • VIN Locking: Once used on a vehicle, the Smarty S-67 becomes VIN# locked to that specific vehicle and ECM. It can only be unlocked by returning the ECM to STOCK software. While locked, it can still read and clear DTCs on other vehicles.
  • Firmware and Tuning Data: Both internal firmware and tuning data can be updated via USB from the MADS internet site.

Usage Features:

  • First-Time Update: Involves reading the vehicle's identification parameters and storing them. The device guides the user through selecting a CaTCHER software version and programming the ECM.
  • Changing Software: Allows users to switch between different CaTCHER programs or return to the STOCK software.
  • ECM Recovery: In case of an interrupted update, the Smarty S-67 has a recovery procedure that does not require pulling fuses or disconnecting batteries. Users are instructed to follow on-screen directions.
  • User Interface: Menu-driven operation with clear on-screen prompts and instructions.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are advised to turn off all power-draining accessories, ensure the vehicle battery is fully charged, and apply the parking brake before programming. Critical warnings include never connecting both USB and ECM cables simultaneously and never unplugging the Smarty during an ECM update.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: It is recommended not to store the Smarty Micro Tuner in temperatures below 32°F, as excessively low temperatures can cause malfunction or damage not covered by warranty.

Maintenance Features:

  • Software Updates: The device's internal firmware and tuning data can be updated by connecting it to a personal computer via USB and downloading the latest software from the MADS website.
  • Error Messages: The manual provides a comprehensive list of possible error messages (e.g., CAN ERROR, COMM. TIME OUT, ECM Changed, Memory Error) along with their causes and suggested solutions, aiding in troubleshooting.
  • Warranty: A one-year limited warranty from the date of sale covers parts within the product kit. Warranty claims require returning the product prepaid with a dated proof of purchase receipt. The warranty does not cover labor or travel time for diagnosis, removal, or reinstallation. Importantly, units that are VIN# locked and sent in for repair or warranty will not be refunded, repaired, or warranted.
  • Service Procedure: For warranty service, users must first restore the vehicle ECM to STOCK software (to unlock the Smarty), then download and fill out an Assistance Request Module from the MADS website, including sales receipt information, serial number, problem description, and contact details.

The Smarty S-67 is a specialized tool for performance enthusiasts, offering significant control over their vehicle's engine parameters, but it requires careful adherence to the provided instructions and awareness of its limitations and warranty conditions.
