Hl,
Four-channel
Balance
Adjustments
The
feeling
of
presence,
direction
and
depth
that
quadraphonic
sound
produces
is
greatly
degraded
if
the
channels
are
not
balanced.
As
you
know,
the
acoustic
balance
is
influenced
by
differences
in
speaker
efficiency
and
the
acoustics
of
the
room.
Carpets,
furniture
placement,
and
room
size
and
shape
have
a
definite
effect
upon
sound
quality
and
balance.
Adjust
each
channel
as
follows
so
that
the
sound
image
focuses
at
the central
point
of
the
four
speakers
(refer
to
the
illustration
on
page
30
or
31).

Leave
each
switch
as
directed
in
Step
3
of
“Phasing
Checks
on
Speakers
and
Amplifiers”
on
page
20.
Do
not
move
the
rear
panel
Input
LEVEL
ADJUST
control
from
the
position
set
in
“Input
Level
Adjustment”
on
page
20.
2.
Turn
the
four
FRONT
and
BACK
LEVEL
controls
fully
clock-
wise.

back
amplifier
has
no
level
control,
perform
Step
A.

With
a
back
amplifier
having
no
input
level
control
Front
right-left
balance
:
Turn
off
the
back
amplifier
and,
while
listening
to
the
sound
from
front
speakers,
adjust
the
fr.
balance
as
usual
with
the
front
amplifier’s
balance
control.
Back
right-left
balance:
Turn
on
the
back
amplifier
and
set
the
front
amplifier’s
volume
to
the
lowest
level.
Turn
the
MASTER
VOLUME
control
to
provide
a
somewhat
lower
volume
than
usual. Listen
to
the
sound
from
the
back
speakers.

you
sense
an
imbalance
of
the
back
speakers,
adjust
the
BACK
LEFT
and
RIGHT
LEVEL
controls
so
the
sound
comes
from
a
point
central
to
the
back
speakers.
Front-back
balance:
Adjust
the
front
volume
with
the
front
amplifier’s
control
so
that
the
front
sound
is
equal
to
that
from
the
back
speakers.
Then,
you
will
hear
the
sound
from
a
point
central
to
the
four
speakers.
If
the
front
amplifier
has
less
power
output
than
the
back
amplifier,
use
the
LOW
OUTPUT
for
the
back
connection.
Or,
lower
the
back
level
with
the
BACK
LEVEL
controls.
Finally
skip
Step
B,
and
proceed
to
Step
4.

With
a
back
amplifier
having
volume
or
balance
controls
Right-left
balance:
Turn
off
the
back
amplifier
and
adjust
the
balance
control
on
the
front
amplifier
so
that
the
sound
comes
from
a
point
central
to
the
front
speakers.
Then,
turn
off
the
front
amplifier
and
adjust
the
back
amplifier’s
balance
contr-
Front-back
balance:
Turn
the
MASTER
VOLUME
control
fu..,
counterclockwise.
Set the
front
amplifier’s
volume
control
to
your
usual
listening
position.
Then,
turn
the
MASTER
VOLUME
control
so
that
the
front
speakers
provide
slightly
fower
output
than
you
prefer.
Adjust
the
back
volume
with
the
back
amplifier’s
control
so
that
the
sound
seems
to
come
from
a
point
central
to
the
four
speakers.
4.
Set
the
MODE
selector
of
the
SQD-2020
to
NORMAL.
At
NORMAL,
the
speaker
volume
will
be
higher
than
at
MONO.
