Overview

The CLARO is an Acne Treatment Light Therapy System designed for effective, safe, and pain-free treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne. It utilizes two types of light therapy – blue light and red light – that work synergistically to address acne breakouts. The device is dermatologist recommended and FDA cleared, with clinically tested wavelengths.

Function Description:

The CLARO device is intended for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne. Mild acne is generally defined as up to approximately 30 spots, which may or may not be inflamed, including papules (small bumps with a rough texture) and pustules (inflamed bumps filled with white or yellow pus, i.e., pimples). Moderate acne is defined as more numerous spots and pimples (up to approximately 100) with greater inflammation (redness/tenderness). If you have nodules (solid mass under the skin) or cysts (liquid-filled bag-like structure under the skin), your acne is considered more severe, and you should consult a doctor for appropriate treatment.

The blue light therapy works by eliminating acne-causing bacteria, while the red light therapy calms inflammation. Clinical studies have shown that the combination of blue (415 nm) and red (660 nm) light is more effective and faster at clearing mild to moderate inflammatory acne than either blue light alone or 5% benzoyl peroxide cream. Consistent use of the CLARO, as per instructions, leads to the destruction of acne-causing bacteria, healing of existing pimples, and a reduction in the appearance of new pimples. Best results are typically observed after 2-4 weeks of daily 3-minute treatments.

Important Safety Information and Contraindications:

  • Do NOT use the device over any suspicious lesion, as this could delay proper medical treatment. Consult the AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) guidelines for identifying potentially suspicious lesions, which include asymmetry, irregular borders, varied color (tan, brown, black, sometimes white, red, blue), diameter usually larger than 6 mm, and bleeding or non-healing skin growths.
  • Do NOT use if you have a history of light-triggered seizures or migraine headaches.
  • Do NOT use on your eyes or eyelids, or stare directly into the lights. Safety goggles are provided and should be worn during treatment.
  • Do NOT use to treat severe nodular or cystic acne, moles, warts, open sores, cancerous lesions, or skin conditions other than mild to moderate acne. Consult a healthcare professional for such conditions.
  • Do NOT treat any one affected area of the skin for more than 6 minutes per day (3 minutes blue light and 3 minutes red light).
  • Do NOT share the CLARO with other people to prevent the transfer of germs and potential infection.
  • Do NOT allow children to use the CLARO unless under adult supervision.
  • Do NOT use if the device is wet or if the handpiece or power cord can come into contact with water while plugged in.
  • Keep the CLARO away from open flames or flammable aerosol products. It is not suitable for use in the presence of a flammable anesthetic mixture with air, oxygen, or nitrous oxide.
  • Do NOT use if your skin is sensitive to light or if you are taking medications that may cause light sensitivity.
  • Do NOT use if you are pregnant.
  • Stop using if you feel pain or your skin becomes uncomfortably hot. Consult a healthcare professional if skin redness persists for more than 24 hours after treatment.
  • Do NOT use in the presence of defibrillation, as the device is not protected against high electrical output from defibrillators.
  • Do NOT use if visibly damaged or not functioning properly, or attempt to open or repair it yourself. There are no user-serviceable parts. Contact customer service for assistance.
  • Do NOT operate in the presence of other devices that intentionally emit unshielded electromagnetic energy (e.g., mobile radio frequency communication equipment), as this may affect CLARO's operation.
  • Do NOT scratch, mark, or damage the light-emitting surface.
  • The CLARO is intended for short-term operation only.
  • Use only the components provided with your CLARO. Using other components, especially other USB cords, could cause injury or damage to the equipment.

Potential Side Effects:

When used as instructed, side effects and complications are rare. Most users may experience a moderate heat sensation and possibly slight reddening (mild erythema) in the treated areas, which are normal and should disappear within approximately an hour after treatment. If irritation or redness persists for several days, consult a physician or dermatologist. Do not hold the device in one place long enough for your skin to get uncomfortably hot, which could cause injury.

Usage Features:

  • Package Contents: Rechargeable CLARO™ Device, Blue Light Treatment Head, Red Light Treatment Head, USB Charging Cord, Pair of Safety Goggles, Operating Manual, Built-in Timer and Memory.
  • Charging: The device comes with a partial initial charge. Before first use, charge for 12 hours. If unused for 3+ months, periodically charge for 6 hours to maintain battery life. The light will flash red 3 times when the battery is low, then auto shut off. The device cannot be used while charging. A steady green light indicates a charged battery, while a blinking green light indicates charging is needed. The Power Indicator Light remains lit during charging and turns off when fully charged. Always attach the USB Cord to the CLARO first before inserting into an outlet. Charge only when needed to prevent malfunction of the power sensor.
  • Treatment Heads: The CLARO comes with interchangeable blue and red LED light treatment heads. To change heads, press the Release Lever at the back of the device, slide out the existing head, and slide in the desired head until it clicks securely.
  • Controls: The device features a simple ON/OFF button. The power light above the button indicates when the device is ON (steady green light) or when the battery needs charging (flashes red 3 times).
  • Safety Feature: The light is only activated when the treatment head is in contact with the skin, reducing the likelihood of light shining into the eyes and prolonging device life.
  • Standby Mode: When the device is on but not in contact with the skin, it enters STANDBY mode and automatically turns off if not used after 3 minutes.
  • Treatment Timer: A built-in reminder beeps once every 3 minutes, signaling to move to a new treatment area. After 12 minutes (4 treatment cycles of 3 minutes), the device automatically shuts off.
  • Pre-Test: Before full treatment, perform a pre-test on a patch of skin on your forearm to check for light sensitivity. Treat the area for 3 minutes, wait 24 hours, and check for redness, discoloration, or discomfort. If none, proceed with treatment.
  • Treatment Steps:
    1. Gently wash and dry your skin.
    2. Position the safety goggles over your eyes, tying the elastic band for a comfortable fit.
    3. Install the Blue Treatment Head.
    4. With the treatment head facing away, press the ON/OFF button. The device will beep once, and the green light will come on.
    5. Gently touch the Blue Treatment Head to your skin; the lights will activate due to contact sensors.
    6. Treat one affected area for the full 3-minute cycle. The device will beep twice after 3 minutes.
    7. Move to another area and repeat. Continue until all affected areas have received blue light treatment.
    8. Turn the device OFF.
    9. Remove the Blue Treatment Head and install the Red Treatment Head.
    10. Repeat steps 2 and 3 (under Blue Light Treatment) to treat each skin area with up to 3 minutes of Red Light.
    11. Do NOT exceed 6 minutes total (3 minutes blue, 3 minutes red) per affected skin area per day.
  • Expected Results: Improvements are typically noticed after 1-2 weeks of daily use, with best results after 2.5-4 weeks. The device can be used 3-7 days per week depending on acne severity.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The CLARO is intended for surface contact and does not require sterilization. After each use, unplug the USB cord. Gently rub the treatment head surface with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water and a mild, alcohol-free cleaner (e.g., dishwashing liquid). Remove cleaner with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water only.
  • Water Resistance: The device is NOT waterproof. Do NOT submerge it in water, put it in a dishwasher, or allow water to enter. If accidentally submerged, do not attempt to use it; contact customer service.
  • Storage: Store in a dry place at 32°F to 140°F (0°C to 60°C) when not in use for prolonged periods.
  • No User Serviceable Parts: The CLARO does not require other regular maintenance. If it malfunctions, discontinue use and contact customer service.
