The Spirax Sarco MFP14-PPU (Vented) Automatic Packaged Pump Unit is a plug-in system specifically engineered for the collection and pumping of hot condensate. Its primary application is in returning condensate for use as boiler feedwater, thereby enhancing system efficiency. The unit is designed to be versatile and can be tailored to a wide array of condensate handling applications.
The MFP14-PPU operates by utilizing steam as its motive power to pump condensate. It is available in single, duplex, or triplex pump configurations, all mounted on a single base plate. This modular design allows for flexible deployment in either duty-only or duty/stand-by applications, providing redundancy and ensuring continuous operation even during maintenance or in the event of a pump failure.
Condensate flows into a main receiver (item 1), from which it is then directed into the pump(s) (item 3). The pump(s) then discharge the condensate into the return line. The system incorporates a receiver vent (Y) that must be piped unreduced and unrestricted to a safe atmospheric discharge point. This vent is crucial for safely releasing flash steam and maintaining proper pressure within the receiver. For optimal performance, the vent line should ideally be vertical and, if horizontal runs are necessary, pitched to ensure self-draining back to the receiver. A suitably sized vent head should be fitted to the top of the vent pipe to ensure safe discharge of flash steam.
An overflow point (X) is also provided, which must be connected to a safe discharge point via a 'U' bend water seal. This 'U' bend, recommended to be at least 305 mm (12") deep, is designed to prevent flash steam from discharging through the overflow during normal operation. It self-fills with water, but initial commissioning requires ensuring a suitable amount of water is present in the 'U' bend. The operating medium (steam) is supplied to the motive supply inlet (W) to power the pump(s).
The MFP14-PPU is designed to fully comply with the requirements of the European Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC, carrying the CE mark where required. All welding adheres to the standards of the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).
The MFP14-PPU is intended for use with Group 2 fluids, specifically steam, air, or water/condensate. While use with other fluids may be possible, it is recommended to consult Spirax Sarco to confirm suitability for such applications. Users must verify material suitability, pressure, and temperature limits, ensuring that the product's maximum operating limits are not exceeded by the system. If there's a risk of dangerous overpressure or overtemperature, a safety device must be included in the system.
Installation requires careful consideration of the unit's location, ideally against a wall, allowing the vent to be easily piped to atmosphere and maintaining reasonable clearance for access. Before installation, all protection covers and films from name-plates should be removed.
Commissioning involves a sequence of steps to ensure safe and effective operation. This includes slowly opening the steam motive supply isolating valve (item 7) and checking the motive drain trap (item 9, if fitted). All isolation valves between the process being drained and the MFP14-PPU (Z), as well as the inlet isolation valve (item 5) and condensate outlet isolation valve (item 5) in the return line (V), must be opened. Condensate should then begin to flow into the receiver and pump(s).
During commissioning, all flanged/screwed connections should be checked for leakage. The pump's operation should be observed for any abnormalities. The pump is designed to cycle periodically, with a minimum cycle time of 8 seconds, accompanied by an audible exhaust at the end of the pumping cycle. This audible cue can be used to monitor the unit's operation and estimate the volume of condensate pumped. Any observed irregularities necessitate rechecking the installation and location sections and, if needed, consulting Spirax Sarco.
Optional extras, such as a pump insulation jacket, are available to enhance performance and safety.
Maintenance of the MFP14-PPU involves regular inspection and, when necessary, repair of its mechanisms. Prior to any maintenance, it is crucial to observe all 'safety information' outlined in the manual. This includes ensuring that any internal pressure has been relieved and the motive supply line is isolated to prevent inadvertent discharge. All hot parts must be allowed to cool to avoid burn risks, and appropriate safety clothing should always be worn.
When handling the unit, suitable lifting gear must be used, adhering to the specified safe lifting points. The MFP14-PPU must be securely fastened during any work. Particular care should be taken when dismantling the pump due to its strong snap mechanism, to prevent personal injury.
For detailed maintenance instructions on individual components of the PPU, users should refer to the relevant product-specific Installation and Maintenance Instructions (IMI) supplied with the unit. Spare parts availability for ancillary units is also detailed in product-specific Technical Information (TI) sheets.
A quick reference trouble-shooting guide is provided to assist in diagnosing and resolving common operational issues. For instance, if the MFP14-PPU fails to operate, potential causes include closed motive supply, condensate inlet, or discharge valves, insufficient motive pressure, a restricted vent, or a blocked condensate inlet or motive supply strainer. The guide provides corresponding checks and cures, such as opening valves, checking motive and static backpressure, ensuring the vent line is clear, and cleaning or replacing strainers.
If the 'U' bend water seal is broken and flash steam is discharging, the guide advises re-priming the 'U' bend with water. Persistent flash steam discharge from point X could indicate a blocked vent line (Y). Large amounts of flash steam from the vent line (Y) could point to a pressurised receiver, a failed-open motive steam trap, or leaking motive inlet and exhaust valves of the pump. The guide directs users to verify the vent line's openness and unrestricted nature, and to inspect, repair, or replace the motive steam trap or pump valves as necessary. Installation and troubleshooting should only be performed by qualified personnel.
