Overview

The STIHL FR 230 is a backpack brushcutter designed for mowing grass and weeds, offering versatility with different cutting attachments. It is powered by a two-stroke engine and features a flexible drive tube and shaft that transmit engine power to the cutting attachment.

Function Description:

The primary function of the STIHL FR 230 is to efficiently cut grass and weeds. It can be equipped with either a mowing head (containing mowing lines) or a grass cutting blade, allowing it to adapt to various vegetation types and mowing tasks. The backpack design distributes the weight of the engine over the user's shoulders and back, enhancing comfort and maneuverability during extended operation. The flexible drive tube connects the powerhead (engine) to the control handle and cutting attachment, providing flexibility and ease of use. The control handle allows the user to operate, hold, and control the trimmer, featuring a throttle trigger for engine speed control, a throttle trigger lockout for safety, and a slide control for starting, running, and stopping the engine. A manual fuel pump eases engine starts, and a choke lever assists in cold starting. The universal deflector, optionally extended with a skirt and line limiting blade, protects the user from flying debris and ensures the correct length of mowing line.

Usage Features:

The STIHL FR 230 is designed for user comfort and efficient operation. The harness distributes the trimmer's weight, reducing fatigue during prolonged use. The loop handle and control handle provide a secure grip and precise control over the cutting attachment.

  • Starting: The engine can be started using a specific procedure involving the manual fuel pump, choke lever, throttle trigger lockout, throttle trigger, and slide control. A video guide is available for this process.
  • Operation: The trimmer is held with both hands, with the right hand on the control handle and the left hand on the loop handle. Mowing is performed by swinging the trimmer in an arc. When using a metal cutting attachment, mowing is done with the left-hand side of the attachment.
  • Line Feed (AutoCut Mowing Head): The AutoCut mowing head features an automatic line feed mechanism. Tapping the rotating mowing head on the ground advances approximately 30 mm of fresh nylon line, which is then trimmed to the correct length by the line limiting blade on the deflector. If the automatic feed fails, the lines can be manually pulled out after shutting off the engine and depressing the spool.
  • Carburetor Adjustment: The carburetor can be adjusted for optimal performance at high altitudes.
  • Safety Features: The trimmer includes a throttle trigger lockout to prevent unintentional acceleration, a deflector to protect against flying debris, and a barrier bar to maintain distance between the operator's leg and metal cutting attachments. The instruction manual emphasizes the importance of wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, safety boots, work gloves, long trousers, face shield, respirator) and maintaining a safe distance from bystanders.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of the STIHL FR 230.

  • Cleaning: The trimmer, deflector, cutting attachment, air filter, and spark plug should be cleaned regularly. Cooling air slots should be cleaned with a soft brush.
  • Lubrication:
    • Flexible Shaft: Lubricate and turn around the flexible shaft every 25 hours of operation using STIHL multipurpose grease.
    • Gearbox: Lubricate the gearbox every 50 hours of operation with STIHL gear grease.
  • Spark Plug: Install a new spark plug every 100 hours of operation. The spark plug should be cleaned and checked for corrosion.
  • Fuel System: The fuel tank and pickup body should be cleaned monthly by a STIHL servicing dealer. The pickup body should be replaced every 12 months.
  • Cutting Attachment: Metal cutting attachments require correct sharpening and balancing, which STIHL recommends having done by a servicing dealer.
  • Storage: Before storing, the trimmer should be cleaned, allowed to cool, and dried if wet. If storing for more than 3 months, the cutting attachment should be removed, the fuel tank drained and cleaned by a STIHL servicing dealer, and the engine run at idling speed until it stops. The trimmer should be stored out of reach of children in a clean and dry condition.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues like engine not starting, erratic idling, or the cutting attachment not rotating properly, along with recommended remedies. This includes checking fuel, spark plug, air filter, and carburetor settings.
  • Repairs: The trimmer and cutting attachment are not user-repairable. Any damage or required servicing should be handled by a STIHL servicing dealer.
