Function Description
The STIHL FR 410 C and FR 480 C are backpack brushcutters designed for various cutting tasks. The flexible shaft transmits engine power to the cutting attachment. The brushcutter can be equipped with different cutting attachments and deflectors depending on the application.

- Manual fuel pump: Facilitates engine starting.

Fuel Mixture:
- Gasoline and two-stroke engine oil in a 1:50 mixing ratio. STIHL recommends STIHL MotoMix or STIHL HP Ultra two-stroke engine oil.
- Gasoline octane number: at least 90 RON, ethanol content not more than 10% (27% for Brazil).
- Fuel mixture should not be older than 30 days (STIHL MotoMix: 5 years).
Usage Features
Assembly:
- Mounting the Powerhead: Secure the powerhead to the carrying system with a screw and washer, tightening to 10 Nm.
- Fitting the Shaft: Connect the coupling sleeve to the shaft and secure the throttle cable with its retainer.
- Mounting the Loop Handle: Position the loop handle with clamps on the shaft and tighten screws, ensuring the distance 'a' is no more than 20 cm.
- Mounting the Loop Handle with Barrier Bar: Similar to the loop handle, but includes a barrier bar for metal cutting attachments.
- Mounting the Deflector: Push the deflector into the guides on the gear housing and tighten screws.
- Fitting the Skirt: Slide the skirt onto the deflector and push the line limiting blade into the skirt slot, then tighten the screw.
- Mounting Mowing Head: Place the thrust plate, then the mowing head, insert the stop pin, turn the mowing head counterclockwise until the stop pin engages, and tighten by hand.
- Mounting Metal Cutting Attachment: Place the thrust plate, then the metal cutting attachment (ensuring cutting edges face the deflector arrow for blades with >4 edges), thrust washer, rider plate, insert stop pin, rotate cutting attachment counterclockwise until the stop pin engages, and tighten the nut counterclockwise.
Starting and Stopping the Engine:
- Starting: Select the correct starting procedure (cold/warm engine), depress the manual fuel pump, set the choke lever to the appropriate position (∑ or I), press the brushcutter against the ground, pull the starter grip, and briefly press the lockout lever and throttle trigger.
- Stopping: Release the throttle trigger and lockout, then depress the stop switch. If the engine does not stop, move the choke lever to the ∑ position.
Operating Modes:
- Winter Mode (below +10 °C): Set the shutter to the snowflake symbol to heat the carburetor.
- Summer Mode (above +10 °C): Set the shutter to the sun symbol.
Holding and Controlling:
- Carry the trimmer on your back.
- Hold the control handle firmly with the right hand (thumb wrapped around the handle).
- Hold the loop handle firmly with the left hand (thumb wrapped around the handle).
Mowing:
- Mowing Head: Swing the brushcutter steadily back and forth in an arc, moving forward slowly.
- Grass Cutting Blade or Brush Knife: Mow with the left part of the metal cutting attachment, moving forward slowly.
- Thinning with a Brush Knife: Dip the metal cutting attachment into the thicket from above, do not lift above waist height.
Adjusting Nylon Line:
- AutoCut Mowing Head: Tap the rotating mowing head on the ground to advance about 30 mm of line. The line limiting blade trims it. If lines are shorter than 25 mm, stop the engine, depress the spool, and pull out the lines.
- SuperCut Mowing Heads: Lines adjust automatically. If lines are shorter than 40 mm, stop the engine and pull them out.
Maintenance Features
Cleaning:
- Trimmer: Shut off the engine, allow to cool, clean with a damp cloth or STIHL resin solvent, and clean cooling air slots with a soft brush.
- Deflector and Cutting Attachment: Shut off the engine, clean with a damp cloth or soft brush.
Maintenance Intervals:
- Every 25 hours: Lubricate the gearbox, lubricate and turn the flexible shaft.
- Every 100 hours: Install a new spark plug.
- Monthly: Have the fuel tank and pickup body (filter) cleaned by a STIHL servicing dealer.
- Every 12 months: Have the pickup body (filter) in the fuel tank replaced by a STIHL servicing dealer.
Specific Maintenance Tasks:
- Lubricating and turning around the flexible shaft: Remove the flexible drive tube and shaft, check for blue discoloration (replace if found), lubricate with STIHL multi-purpose grease, turn 180°, and reassemble.
- Lubricating the gearbox: Remove the screw plug, if no grease is visible, squeeze 5g of STIHL gear lubricant into the housing, refit the plug, and run the brushcutter for 1 minute without load.
- Sharpening and Balancing Metal Cutting Attachment: STIHL recommends professional sharpening and balancing. Follow instructions provided with the cutting attachment.
- Replacing Air Filter: Replace if damaged or if engine power is lost. Remove the filter cover, clean the surrounding area, remove the old filter, install a new one, and reassemble.
- Cleaning Spark Plug: Shut off the engine, remove the cover and spark plug boot, clean the spark plug (replace if corroded), and reassemble.
- Adjusting Idle Speed: Warm up the engine, then turn the idle speed screw (LA) clockwise until the engine runs smoothly. If the cutting attachment rotates at idle, turn the screw counterclockwise until it stops rotating.
- Adjusting Throttle Cable: Press and hold the throttle trigger, turn screw (2) clockwise until resistance is felt, then turn another half-turn.
Storage:
- Shut off the engine, fit the transport guard (if metal cutting attachment is mounted).
- Store out of reach of children, in a clean and dry condition.
- For storage longer than 30 days: Remove cutting attachment, drain fuel tank, press manual fuel pump 5 times, and run the engine at idle until it stops.
