to start the cut-off machine when the 
abrasive cutting wheel is in a cut
N Make sure you have a secure 
footing
N Press the cut-off machine firmly 
against the ground or other solid 
surface, holding the handle with 
your left hand, thumb wrapped 
round the handle
N Press the cut-off machine against 
the ground or other solid surface 
with your right knee on the rear 
handle or body of the cut-off 
machine
N Pull the starter grip slowly with your 
right hand until you feel it engage – 
then give it a brisk strong pull – do 
not pull the starter rope all the way 
out
WARNING
Do not let the starter grip snap back – it 
may break or you may injure your hand 
or fingers. Guide it back into the housing 
in the opposite direction so that it can 
rewind properly.
WARNING
Do not drop start the cut-off machine. 
Drop starting means pushing the 
machine away from the operator, or 
allowing it to drop toward the ground, 
while pulling on the starter grip. This 
method is very dangerous because you 
could lose control of the cut-off machine.
Once the engine is running
N Let the engine run for a few seconds 
- important: the abrasive wheel may 
begin to rotate
N Blip the throttle trigger and throttle 
trigger lockout so that the engine 
settles down to idle speed
The cut-off machine is now ready for 
use.
WARNING
The abrasive wheel must not rotate 
when the engine is idling. Have the 
machine repaired by a STIHL servicing 
dealer if the abrasive wheel turns while 
the engine is idling. STIHL recommends 
STIHL servicing dealers.
Turning off the engine
N Move stop switch to STOP or 0
Additional hints on starting
If the tank has been drained completely
N Refuel the machine
N Press the manual fuel pump bulb 
7-10 times – even if the pump bulb 
is full of fuel
N Restart the engine
At very low temperatures or if the 
machine is extremely cold
N Allow the engine to warm up longer 
after starting – important: the 
abrasive wheel may begin to rotate
N Blip the throttle trigger and throttle 
trigger lockout so that the engine 
settles down to idle speed
