9.2 COMPASS uSE
• Keep the watch parallel to the horizon, or parallel
to the ground (assuming the ground is level)
• The compass reading will ash if it is picking up
any distortion. Be sure that the watch is far
away from magnets and objects and appliances
that contain magnets such as speakers, motors,
cellular phones, etc…
• Compass mode will go idle to save battery power
if no change in direction has been sensed for
one minute
• Calibrate the compass often, especially when:
* You are using the watch for the first time
* You have recently replaced the battery
* Bearing reading is flashing
* Your angle of declination has changed
9.3 COMPASS IDLE REFRESH
In order to conserve battery power, the compass
will go idle (sleep mode) after 1 minute of use.
• Press ST/STP or LAP/RST to wake the compass
from idle status
9.4 TAKE A REVERSE COMPASS BEARInG
The Traileader allows you to quickly take a
reverse bearing of a distant landmark. A
reverse bearing is a bearing that is exact
180° opposite of your actual bearing.
Reverse bearings can be very useful
for advanced orienteering exercises
including triangulation to determine your
whereabouts in the wild.
Access the Compass Display (See section 9.1
for how to access the Compass display)
• Press ST/STP to obtain a backward bearing
• Press ST/STP again to return to regular
bearing
9.5 LOCK THE COMPASS BEARInG
The Traileader allows you to lock a
particularly important compass bearing.
Once the lock is in activated, the digital
compass no longer displays its adjusted
bearing based on change of direction,
but rather only displays the locked
bearing reading.
