Overview

This document serves as the operating instructions for the Technics SL-PG340 Compact Disc Player, a device designed for playing compact discs. It provides comprehensive guidance on its functions, usage, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Function Description:

The Technics SL-PG340 is a Compact Disc Player that offers various playback modes and recording features. Its primary function is to play audio CDs, supporting both sequential and random playback. The device includes a disc tray for loading CDs and a display section to show track numbers, time information, and various indicators for active functions.

Key playback functions include:

  • Sequential Play: Standard playback of tracks in the order they appear on the disc.
  • Random Play: Plays tracks in a random sequence, which can be applied to the entire disc or only programmed tracks.
  • Program Play: Allows users to create a custom sequence of up to 20 tracks from a disc. This feature is particularly useful for creating personalized playlists.
  • Search/Skip Function: Enables rapid forward or backward searching within a track and skipping between tracks.
  • Repeat Function: Allows continuous repetition of the entire disc or a programmed sequence.

Beyond basic playback, the SL-PG340 incorporates advanced features for recording to cassette decks:

  • Sequential Recording (Automatic Editing): This function automatically calculates how many tracks can fit on each side of a cassette tape, considering the tape length, and programs them for recording. It also inserts silent gaps between tracks for a clean recording.
  • Program Editing: Users can manually select and sequence desired tracks from a CD for recording onto a cassette tape. This allows for the creation of custom compilations.
  • Link Function: This feature is designed for recording tracks from multiple CDs onto a single cassette tape, managing the remaining tape space and track sequencing across different discs.
  • Fade Out Editing: Allows users to specify a fade-out time at the end of a recording, providing a smooth transition.

The device also includes several special features to enhance user experience:

  • Auto Cue: This function allows the unit to pause at the beginning of each track, ready to start playback precisely when desired.
  • Time Fade Function: Enables the unit to finish playback with a fade-out at a user-specified time.
  • Time Mode Selection: Provides different display modes to show track in play and elapsed time, total remaining time on disc, time remaining in track, and total elapsed time since the beginning of the disc.

Usage Features:

The SL-PG340 is designed for straightforward operation, with clearly labeled controls on the front panel.

  • Power Control: A power switch turns the unit on and off.
  • Disc Loading: A dedicated open/close button controls the disc tray for inserting and removing CDs. Discs should be inserted with the label facing upward.
  • Playback Controls: Standard buttons for Play, Stop, and Pause are provided.
  • Navigation: Skip buttons (forward and backward) allow users to move between tracks, while Search buttons enable fast scanning within a track.
  • Programming: A Program button initiates program play, with Clear and Recall buttons for managing programmed sequences.
  • Recording-Specific Controls: Buttons for Tape Length, Tape Side Select, Disc Link, and Time Fade are available for the recording functions.
  • Special Features: Auto Cue, Peak Search, Repeat, and Random buttons activate their respective functions.
  • Display: The display section provides visual feedback on the current status, including track number, index, time, and active functions like PGM, LINK, PEAK, A.CUE, REPEAT, A-B, RANDOM, EDIT, and T.FADE.

Connecting the device involves simple steps:

  1. Connect the stereo connection cable to the amplifier's CD or AUX terminals.
  2. Connect the synchro edit cable to a compatible Technics cassette deck's SYNCHRO EDIT terminal for synchronized recording.
  3. Connect the remote control cable to a Technics receiver or cassette deck's REMOTE terminal.
  4. Connect the AC power supply cord to an AC outlet.

When using recording features, it is important to prepare the cassette deck by inserting a tape, selecting noise reduction and reverse modes, and setting it to recording standby. The unit can automatically calculate track arrangements for optimal tape usage.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of the SL-PG340.

  • Cabinet and Controls: The cabinet, panel, and controls should be cleaned with a soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Abrasive pads, scouring powders, or solvents like alcohol or benzine should not be used.
  • Compact Discs:
    • Discs should be handled by their edges to avoid fingerprints, dirt, and scratches, which can cause skipping or distortion.
    • Cleaning should be done with a soft, damp (water only) cloth, wiping directly outward from the center of the disc, not in a circular motion.
    • Record cleaning sprays, benzine, thinner, static electricity prevention liquids, or any other solvents should be avoided.
    • Writing on the label side of the disc with a ball-point pen or other writing instrument is not recommended.
  • Storage: Discs should be stored in their cases to protect them from dust, scratches, and warping. Avoid storing discs in direct sunlight, humid or dusty locations, near heat sources, or in automobile glove compartments or rear ledges.
  • Environmental Precautions:
    • Avoid using the unit near water or in damp basements.
    • Condensation may form on the lens if the unit is moved from a cold to a warm environment, or if a heater is turned on, or in steamy/humid rooms. If this occurs, the unit should be turned on and allowed to dry for about an hour before use.
    • The unit should be situated away from heat sources and strong magnetism.
    • Ensure proper ventilation by allowing at least 10 cm (4") clearance from the rear of the unit.
    • Prevent foreign objects or liquids from entering the unit.
    • Do not place heavy objects on top of the unit.
    • Place the unit on a flat, level surface.
    • If using a cart or stand, ensure it is recommended by the manufacturer and move the combination carefully to prevent overturning.
    • The unit should not be wall or ceiling mounted unless specified.
  • Power Cord: The power supply cord should be routed to prevent it from being walked on or pinched. Always grasp the plug body when connecting or disconnecting.
  • Nonuse Periods: Turn off the power when the unit is not in use. For long periods of nonuse, unplug the unit from the AC outlet.
  • Servicing: The unit contains no user-serviceable parts inside. Any servicing beyond what is described in the operating instructions should be referred to qualified service personnel. Do not remove screws or covers.
