Section 3 — Algebraic keys
The keys discussed in this section all perform tasks lhal are frequently
needed in algebraic operations
Note : Limits on the range and accuracy ol these keys are discussed In the
Appendix.
2nd [x ] 2nd [SgnJ. 2nd |lntg| 2nd {Free] - Number portion
keys
2nd 1 I x 1 calculates and displays the absolute value of the number in the
display The absolute value of a number Is the magnitude of the number,
regardless of its sign Thus the result of 2nd: lx] is ahvays a positive
number
2nd [Sgn] applies the signum function lo the value displayed If the
number Is negative, then - f is put in the display tf the number is aero or
positive, then 1 Is put In the display
2nd pntg] displays Ihe integer part ol the number In the display register
and discards the fractional part See the loMowmg note
2nd [Free] displays the fractional part of the number in the display
register and discards the integer part See the following note.
Note these key sequences actually operate on the 13 internal digits in the
display register, not just the 10 digits shown in the display For example, the
internal value 4 999999999994 is displayed as 5. Pressing 2nd [tnfg]
displays 4 not 5 but pressing 2nd |Frac[ displays i
2nd |\x], 2nd [x»] - Square root and square keys
These keys find the square roots and squares ot numbers They act
immediately on the number in the display and do not affect pending
calculations
The square root key 2nd [vx] calculates the square root of the positive
number In the display The square root of a number (x) is another number
(labeled vx) auch that vx limes Vx equals x
[2nd [x*] calculates the square ol the number in the display, multiplying
the displayed number by itself
