NUMBER SYSTEMS
Section 5 — Number Systems
In previous sections of this manual, numbers are entered and displayed in
the decimal number system However, you can also enter numbers and
perform arithmetic calculations in the octal and hexadecimal number
systems, and you can convert a number from one system to another
!*y . ME El - Number-System Mode Key
The (E key changes the number-system mode When you
press [E I he integer portion of the number in the display is automatically
converted to Its equivalent in the new number-system
When you turn the calculator on. It is in the decimal mode Each time you
press [flfj. the number-system mode advances from one mode to the next
in the order shown below

Note : HEX and OCT in the display indicate hexadecimal and octal modes,
respectively There la no display indictator tor decimal mode.
The INV [El h.ey sequence changes the number-system mode in
the reverse direction from the E . key When you press INV Ijjfi the
integer portion of the number in the display is automatically converted to its
equivalent In the new number system
Each time you press I.M] [El . the number-system mode advances from
one mode to the next in the reverse ot the order shown above
In decimal mode, the calculator interprets all numbers as decimal (base 10)
numbers Normally, you should keep the calculator In the decimal mode
This mode enables you to perform all the calculations described this far in
the manual
In the hexadecimal mode. Indicated by HEX in the display, tho calculator
Interprets aH numbers as hexadecimal (base 16) numbers It you attempt to
convert a number to the hexadecimal mode that is outside the calculator’s
range of hexadecimal numbers, an error condition occurs
In the octal mode, indicated by OCT in the display, the calculator interprets
all numbers as octal (base 81 numbers It you attempt to convert a number
