10.OilLeaks
A.Thepresenceofoilonpropellerbladesmayormaynotindicateaproblem.
(1)Allpropellerbladesmayshowminorgreasestreakingwhennewornewlyoverhauled.Such
streakingisnormalandistheresultoflubricantappliedtothebladeO-ringduringassembly.
(2)Oil-lledpropellersmayshowsignsofredoildepositedonthebladeshankduringoperation
afteranoverhaulorafteraprolongedperiodofinactivity.
B.Checkingandcorrectingapropellerleakingoilattheblade.
NOTE:ThisprocedurewillonlycorrectbladeshankleaksatthebladeshankO-ring.
(1)Useacleanclothdampenedwithmineralspiritstocleanthebladeofalltracesofoilanddirt.
CAUTION:Neverexceedthepublishedengineoperationallimits.
(2)Runtheengineandcyclethepropelleratleastvetimes.
(a)Cyclethepropellerfromlowtohighpitch.
(3)Checkthebladeforsignsofcontinuedleakage.
(a)Ifnecessary,cleanthebladeagainwithaclothdampenedwithmineralspiritstocleanthe
bladeofalltracesofoilanddirt.
(4)Runtheengineandcyclethepropelleratleastvetimes.
(a)Cyclethepropellerfromlowtohighpitch.
(5)Iftheleakhasstoppedcompletely,nootheractionisrequired.
(6)Iftherateofleakhasdecreased,itispermissibletocontinueoperationofthepropellerforupto
20hours.
(a)Ifthereisleakageafter20hours,thepropellermustberemovedfromtheaircraftandsent
toanFAAapprovedPart145PropellerRepairStationorinternationalequivalentforrepair.
(7)Iftherateofleakageincreases,donotoperatethepropeller.Immediatelysendthepropellerto
anFAAapprovedPart145PropellerRepairStationorinternationalequivalentforrepair.
C.Oilleaksatlocationsotherthanblades.
(1)Pistonaircraftpropellers.
(a)LeakagefromthecylinderarearequiresremovalofthepropellerandrepairbyanFAA
approvedPart145PropellerRepairStationorinternationalequivalent.
(b)Ifleaksarefoundonanyotherspotonthebladeorthehub,removethepropellerand
haveitrepairedbyanFAAapprovedPart145PropellerRepairStationorinternational
equivalent.
(c)Leaksatthehub/propellershaftinterfacerequiresremovalofthepropellerandreplacement
oftherearhubO-ring.
11.PropellerOverspeeding
A.Duringnormaloperation,thepropellersuddenlyoverspeedspastratedRPM.
(1)PossibleCauses:
(a)Anumberoffactorscancausepropelleroverspeeding,butthesearenormallycausedby
theengineorgovernor.
(2)CorrectiveAction:
(a)RefertoPropellerOverspeedInspectionRequirements,forrequiredactionafteran
overspeedincident.
