1.ProceduresForMaintenance
A.Maintenancebeginswiththeoperatorandincludesinspectiontogetherwithregularcare.Many
maintenancetasksthatmaybeaccomplishedataminimumcostcanextendthelifeofthepropeller
andreduceorpreventcostlyrepairs.ThefollowingisalistingofwhatoperatorsofaircraftCANand
CANNOTdo.
B.OperatorsCANdothefollowing:
NOTE:ThefollowingactivitiesarenotpreventivemaintenanceactivitiesasdenedbyTitle14of
theCodeofFederalRegulations,Part43.AppendixA,MajorAlterations,MajorRepairs,
andPreventiveMaintenance.
(1)Performavisualpreightinspectionofthebladesfornicks,scratches,dents,erosion,
delamination,cracks,etc.Apparentdamagefoundshouldbereferredtoanappropriatelyrated
mechanic.Acrackordelaminationmaybecausefortheremovalofthepropeller.
(2)Checkthepropellerspinnerattachingscrewsforsecurityandcheckthespinnerfordamage.
(3)Checkthepropellerforevidenceofoilleakage.
(4)Cleanpropellerbladesperiodicallyusingfreshwater,anon-alkalinecleanerandasoftclothor
softbrush.Drywithasoftcloth.
CAUTION:Donotusesolventstocleanthepropellerblades.
(a)Makesurethebladethatyouarecleaningispointingdown.
(b)Donotspraythemildsoapandwatersolutionintothebladeretentionareabecausewater
maybeforcedintothehub.
CAUTION:Donotpowerwashthepropeller,aswatermaybeforcedpast
thebladeO-rings.Waterinsidethehubwillcausecorrosion
andmaycausepropellerfailure.
(5)Ensurethatthetachometerisappropriatelymarkedforoperationallimitationsofthepropeller
andthatthetachometeraccuracyischeckedatperiodicinspectionintervals.
(6)Makesurethattheapplicableinstallation,information,andwarningdecalsareonthepropeller.
Thesedecalsmayincludewarningsagainstpushingorpullingonthepropeller,themodel
number,thecorrectbolttorque,anddynamicbalancinginformation.
(7)Makesureeachpropellerhasitsownmaintenancerecord.
(8)TheoperatormustarrangefortheoverhaulofthepropellerwhenitreachestheMcCauley
recommendedservicetimelimits.RefertoTimeBetweenPropellerOverhaulforrequired
propelleroverhaulintervals.
(9)Forsafetyandglarereductionforconventionalsingle-enginetractortypeaircraft,makesurethe
face(back)sideofeachpropellerbladeispaintedatblackandthepropellertipsonthecamber
(forward)sideofeachbladearepaintedwiththeappropriatecolorstoensuregoodvisibility.
Makesurethatanypropellerpainttouchupisdoneequallytoeachbladesothatthebalance
ofthepropellerisnotdisturbed.
(10)McCauleyspinnerscanbepolished,usecommerciallyavailablepolishingcompounds.
C.OperatorsCANNOTdothefollowing:
NOTE:ThefollowingisalistingofactionsthatshallnotbeperformedonorsubjectaMcCauley
propellerorcomponentto.
(1)Donotoperateanyaircraftafterthepropellerhasbeensubjectedtoimpactdamagewithout
athoroughinspectionandhasbeenapprovedforreturntoservicebyanappropriatelyrated
personorrepairfacility.
(2)Neverrepairanybladedefectbyheating.Thiscaninduceprematurebladefailure.
