A.ObjectStrikeofStationaryPropeller
(1)"ObjectStrike"isdenedasanyimpactofanon-rotatingpropellerbyasubstantialmovingobject,
suchasanypersonnelvehicle,aircrafttug,groundpowerunit,etc.
NOTE:Thedenitionisintendedforuseasanexampleonly.Determinationastowhether
ornotanobjectstrikeactuallyoccurredisultimatelytheresponsibilityoftheaircraft
operator.
(2)Inspectthepropellerbladesfordamagesuchasscrapes,gouges,cracks,crushedareas,etc.
causedbytheimpact.Anydamagethatisbeyondnormaloperationlimitsiscauseforpropeller
removalandrepair.
(3)Checkbladetwist.Allbladesinapropellershouldhavethesameamountof"rotationalplay".If
thedifferenceinrotationalplaybetweentwobladesisbeyond1.0degree,uneveninternalwear
ordamageisthepossiblecause.
(a)Forexample,rotationalmovementofNo.1blademeasures1.2degreesandNo.2blade
measures2.3degrees.Thiswouldbeconsideredexcessivesincethedifferenceismore
than1.0degree.Thischeckmustbeperformedevery10hoursforthenext20hours.If
nochangeisseenafter20hours,inspectionsmaybediscontinued.
NOTE:Theresultsofanobjectstrikeinspectionshouldbenotedinthepropellerlog
bookand,ifrequired,notewhenthenextinspectionisdue.
(4)Ifanypropellerbladeisdamagedbeyondeldrepairlimits,takethepropellerassemblytoan
FAAapprovedPart145PropellerRepairStationorinternationalequivalentforrepair.
B.BladeStrikeofRotatingPropeller
(1)"BladeStrike",sometimesreferredtoas"GroundStrike",isdenedasanyimpactorsuspected
impactoftherotatingpropelleruponsuchitemsas,butnotlimitedto,theground,towbars,
landinglights,carts,snowbanks,hedges,etc.Pleasenotethattheabovedenitionisintended
foruseasanexampleonly.Determinationastowhetherornotabladestrikeactuallyoccurred
isultimatelytheresponsibilityoftheaircraftoperator.
CAUTION:Internaldamagecanoccurwithoutevidenceofgrossexternal
damage.
(a)AnyMcCauleypropellerexperiencingabladestrikemustberemovedfromtheaircraftand
overhauledbyanapprovedMcCauleycompositepropelleroverhaulfacilityinaccordance
withtheapplicableoverhaulmanual.
(2)BirdStrike
(a)"BirdStrike"canbedenedastheimpactofanybirdintotherotatingpropellercausing
damage.
