(11)DimensionalMeasurementsvsLimits.Thisisatestthatrequiresspecializedtoolsandtraining
toaccomplishbyanFAAapprovedpropellerrepairstationorinternationalequivalentfacility.
Propellersthatarefoundtohavedimensionalmeasurementsbeyondtheestablishedlimitsmust
berepairedorremovedfromserviceandscrapped.
(12)LeadingEdgeGuardCrack(s).Leadingedgeguardsthathaveatotalcombinedcracklength
of3inchesoranytwocracksthatarewithin1inchofeachother.Thisisaconditionthatwill
requirespecializedtrainingtodeterminetheextentofleadingedgeguardcracking.Propellers
withleadingedgeguardsthatarecrackedbeyondtheselimitsmusthavetheleadingedgeguard
replacedbyanFAAapprovedpropellerrepairstationorinternationalequivalentfacilityorthe
propellermustberemovedfromserviceandscrapped.
(13)ErosionDamageReconstruction.Thisrepairwillrequirespecializedtoolsandtrainingtodo
successfully.ThistypeofrepaircanonlybedonebyanapprovedMcCauleycompositepropeller
overhaulfacility.
(14)Delaminationinthepropellerbladeshankarea(areauptobladestation4.8).Thisisacondition
thatwillrequirespecializedtoolsandtrainingtodeterminetheextentofdelamination.Propeller
bladesthataresuspectedtohavedelaminatedmaterialintheshankareamustbetakento
anFAAapprovedpropellerrepairstationorinternationalequivalentfacility.TheFAAapproved
propellerrepairstationorinternationalequivalentshallcontactMcCauleyProductSupportto
helpdetermineifthepropellerbladeisrepairableormustberemovedfromserviceandscrapped.
Ifthedelaminationextendsinboardofbladestation4.8(beginningoftheurethanecollar)the
delaminationisnotrepairableandthebladeshallberemovedfromserviceandscrapped.
(15)OneormoreCarbonberPliesareDamaged.Propellersfoundwithcarbonberplydamage,
thepropellermustberemovedfromserviceandscrapped.
(16)BurnDamageorDiscoloration.Propellersthatexhibitsignsofburningorheatdamagemustbe
removedfromserviceandscrapped.
14.Non-DestructiveInspectionProcedures
A.VisualInspection
(1)RefertoDailyorPreightInspectionforrequirementstovisuallyinspectthepropeller.
B.GuardandLaminateTapTests(CoinT apInspection)
(1)Description
(a)Thisisatestthatmaybebeperformedattheoperatorleveltodetermineifthereisa
possibledelaminationinthepropeller.McCauleycompositepropelleroverhaulfacilities
willalsousethistesttohelpdeterminetheextentofanysuspecteddamage.
NOTE:Anyindicationsbycointaptestingofadelaminationattheowner/operatorlevel
mustbeevaluatedand/orrepairedbyanFAAapprovedPart145RepairStation
orinternationalequivalentwithpersonneltrainedtorepairMcCauleycomposite
propellersbeforecontinuedoperation.
(2)ToolsRequired
(a)Alargecoin,washerormetaldiskshapedtoolweighingnomorethan1ounce,(28.35g).
(3)InspectionProcedure
(a)Establishagridoneachsurfacetobeinspected0.5inchesby0.5inches(12.7mmby12.7
mm)usinganerasablemarker.Donotuseagraphitepencil.
NOTE:Asmallergridcanbeusedifdesired.Theleadingedgeguardmayrequirea
0.25inchby0.25inchgrid(6.35mmby6.35mm).
NOTE:Theacousticresponsechangesoverthegriddedarea.Theacousticresponse
fromeachtapshouldonlybecomparedtoadjacent/contiguousareasofsimilar
structuralthicknessandcomposition.Forexample,thecompositeareaovera
foamcoreatbladestation20willhaveadifferentacousticresponsethanthe
compositeareaoverthebladeshankatbladestation9.
(b)Taptheareatobeinspectedwithacoinateachgridpoint.Payparticularattentiontothe
leadingedgeoftheleadingedgeguard.
