Overview

This document provides operating instructions for the Vaillant ecoTEC plus VU and VUW series, which are gas-fired wall-hung boilers designed for heating installations and, in the case of VUW models, for hot water generation. The manual is intended for the operator, detailing how to safely and efficiently use and maintain the product.

Function Description

The ecoTEC plus series functions primarily as a heat generator for closed heating systems. VUW models additionally provide hot water generation. The product operates by burning gas to heat water, which then circulates through the heating system or is supplied as domestic hot water.

The device features an operator control panel with a display and various buttons for interaction. The display shows critical information such as the current heating flow temperature, system filling pressure, operating mode, and any fault codes. Symbols on the display indicate the current status, including:

  • Comfort mode active (C): Indicates that the product is ready to supply hot water at the required temperature without delay.
  • Maintenance required: Signals that the product needs maintenance.
  • Summer mode active: Heating mode is switched off, typically during warmer months.
  • Burner anti-cycling time active: The burner is prevented from frequently switching on and off to prolong the product's lifespan.
  • Fault in the product: An error has occurred, and a fault code will be displayed.
  • Burner operating correctly: The burner is actively heating.
  • Current filling pressure of the heating system: Displays the pressure, with dashed lines indicating the permitted range. Flashing lines mean the pressure is outside the range.
  • Hot water generation active: Indicates that the product is currently generating hot water.
  • Heating mode active: Shows that the product is actively heating the system.

The product incorporates safety features such as an automatic anti-legionella function for shift-load cylinders, which heats the cylinder to 70 °C if the temperature falls below 50 °C for 24 hours. Frost protection is also integrated, activating automatically to heat circulating water to approximately 30 °C if the heating flow temperature drops below 5 °C, provided the product is switched on and connected to power.

Usage Features

The ecoTEC plus offers a user-friendly operating concept with two main operating levels: an operator level for general use and a protected competent person level for advanced settings.

Basic Operation:

  • Switching on/off: The product is switched on or off using a dedicated on/off button.
  • Setting heating flow temperature: The heating flow temperature can be adjusted using the operating buttons. If a controller is connected, the temperature is set via the controller.
  • Setting hot water temperature: The hot water temperature can be set similarly, either directly on the product or via a connected controller.
  • Activating/Deactivating Comfort mode: This mode ensures immediate hot water supply at the desired temperature. It can be toggled on or off using the operating buttons.
  • Activating shift-load cylinder: For products with integrated hot water generation and a shift-load cylinder, activating Comfort mode and setting the hot water temperature enables cylinder charging.
  • Switching off heating mode (Summer mode): The heating mode can be switched off by setting the heating flow temperature to "Heating off," which is useful during warmer periods.
  • Switching off hot water generation: Hot water generation can be switched off by setting the hot water temperature to "Heating off."

System Monitoring:

  • Checking filling pressure: The current filling pressure of the heating system can be viewed on the display. It should ideally be between 0.1 MPa and 0.2 MPa (1.0 to 2.0 bar) when the system is cold. If the pressure falls below 0.05 MPa (0.5 bar), the product will switch off and display a fault message (F.22).
  • Filling the heating installation: If the pressure is too low, the heating installation needs to be refilled with suitable heating water. This involves connecting a filling cock to a hot water supply, opening radiator valves, and slowly allowing water to flow until the correct pressure is reached.
  • Calling up status codes (Live monitor): The current operating status (status code) can be accessed by pressing specific buttons simultaneously, providing detailed information about the product's operation.

Troubleshooting:

  • The manual provides a troubleshooting table to help identify and rectify common faults, such as the product not starting up, no hot water, or heating remaining cold.
  • Fault messages (e.g., F.22 for low water pressure, F.28 for ignition failure) are displayed to guide the user in diagnosing issues. In case of persistent faults, contacting a competent person is advised.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the product's long-term reliability and safe operation.

  • Annual inspection: An annual inspection by a competent person is a prerequisite for ensuring the product remains operational and safe.
  • Caring for the product: The casing should be cleaned with a damp cloth and a solvent-free soap. Harsh cleaning agents, sprays, scouring agents, detergents, or chlorine-containing substances should be avoided to prevent corrosion damage.
  • Reading maintenance messages: The display will show a specific symbol if maintenance work is required. This indicates that the product is not in fault mode but needs attention. If the water pressure is also flashing, adding more heating water might resolve the issue.
  • Checking condensate drain pipework and tundish: The condensate drain pipework and tundish must always be clear and penetrable. Regular checks for blockages or faults are recommended, and any issues should be rectified by a competent person.

Decommissioning:

  • Temporary decommissioning: For temporary periods when frost is not expected (e.g., holidays), the product can be switched off using the on/off button. For combination products, the cold water stop valve and gas isolator cock should also be closed. The frost protection and monitoring devices remain active only when the unit is connected to power and the gas isolator cock is open.
  • Permanent decommissioning: Permanent decommissioning must be carried out by a competent person.

Recycling and disposal:

  • The installer is responsible for disposing of the packaging.
  • The product itself should not be disposed of with household waste but handed in at a collection center for old electrical or electronic appliances.
  • If the product contains batteries marked with the relevant symbol, these batteries should be disposed of at a collection point for batteries, as they may contain substances hazardous to human health and the environment.

Guarantee and customer service:

  • Vaillant provides a two-year parts and labor guarantee against defects. The second year of the guarantee requires an annual service by a competent person.
  • Product registration is simple and can be done by returning the Guarantee Registration Card within 30 days of installation.
  • For immediate help or faults, customers are advised to contact their installer first. If the installer is unavailable, Vaillant Service Solutions can be contacted directly.
  • Maintenance agreements are recommended for regular servicing.
