Why won't the pilot light stay lit on my Vermont Castings Intrepid INDVR Gas Heater?

  If the pilot light on your Vermont Castings Gas Heater won't stay lit after following the lighting instructions, the issue might stem from a defective pilot generator (thermocouple). Ensure the pilot flame properly touches the thermocouple/thermopile. Try cleaning or adjusting the pilot for the best possible flame impingement on the thermopile and thermocouple. Alternatively, a defective automatic valve could be the culprit. Turn the valve knob to “Pilot” and maintain flow to pilot; a millivolt meter should read greater than 10mV. If the reading is okay and the pilot still doesn’t stay on, consider replacing the gas valve. Note: An interrupter block (not supplied) must be used to conduct this test.

  If the spark ignitor on your Vermont Castings Gas Heater won't light, first, try lighting the pilot with a match. If it lights, turn off the pilot and try pushing the red button again. If the pilot still doesn't light, check the gap at the electrode and pilot; it should be about 1/8 inch to ensure a strong spark. If using a match works, the ignitor itself might be defective. With the control knob in the pilot position, push and hold the control knob all the way in. Check for a spark at the electrode and pilot. If there's no spark and the electrode wire is properly connected, replace the battery in the ignitor module. If the problem continues, replace the entire ignitor module box.

Try cleaning and adjusting the pilot flame to ensure it properly impinges on the thermopile and thermocouple. Also, check the vent terminal for any blockages that might be causing the flue gases to recycle.
