NewstringentstandardsforexhaustemissioncontrolbeginwiththeUS2010enginemodel
year.TheDieselParticulateFilter(DPF)systemhasbeendevelopedtoactincombination
withultralowsulphurdiesel(ULSD)fueltoreduceparticulateemissionstomeetthe
requirement.TheExhaustAfter-TreatmentSystem(EA TS)includesalltheengineand
exhaustemissionscontrolcomponentsthatarerequiredtomeetthestringentUS2010
standard.
ParticulatematterconsistsofsootandashintheexhaustthatengineswithanEGRsystem
alone,arenotequippedtohandle.Theparticulatematterisconsideredacontaminantthat
containsundesirableelements.TheDPFsystemreducestheunwantedelementstoamore
acceptableleveldenedintheregulations.Therearemultiplemethodsofreducingthese
emissions.VOL VOhasselectedtouseaDieselOxidationCatalyst(DOC)withacatalyzed
dieselparticulatelter.Theotherusesadieselparticulatelterofadifferentkindwithouta
DOCandinitsplaceusesacombustionchambertoheattheexhaustmixturethuscausing
activeregeneration.
Theparticulatematterremovedfromtheexhaustcollectsontheltersurfaces.Toavoid
eventualblockage,whichwouldincreaseexhaustbackpressureandaffectpowerandfuel
economy,theltermustbecleaned.TheDPFiscleanedautomatically.Thesootbreaks
downtosafersubstancesbeforebeingreleasedtotheatmosphere.Someoftheashremains,
buttakesalongtimetoreachthepointwhereashclogsthelter.
Cleaningaltersoitcancontinuetofunctioniscalled“regeneration.”Dependingonvehicle
usage,theengineutilizesapassiveorparkedregenerationsystem.Eithersystemuseshigh
heattobreakdownthechemicalproperties.
In“passiveregeneration,”theexhaustproducesenoughheatcontinuouslytoconvert
thesoot,withapproximately260°C(500°F)beingrequired.Theprocessisslowand
continuesindenitely.Passiveregenerationispossibleonlyinvehicleapplicationswhere
thetemperatureislikelytoremainatorabovetherequiredtemperaturelevel,makingactive
regenerationunnecessary.
Parkedregenerationisinitiatedmanuallybythedriverwhenalertedbythedash.Thevehicle
mustbestationarytobegintheregeneration,andremainstationarytocomplete.
TheAftertreatmentDPFRegenerationsystemisself-monitoring.Undercertaindutycycles
driveractionisneededtoperformaparkedregeneration.Whendriveractionisneededto
performaparkedregenerationtheAftertreatmentDPFRegenerationNeededicononthe
instrumentclusterashesandthemessage“ParkedREGENNeeded”isdisplayed.Initiatea
parkedAftertreatmentDPFregenerationatthenextstop.
