DieselExhaustFluid(DEF)isareactantthat'skeytotheSCRprocess.It'sanontoxic,
aqueoussolutionof32.5%ureaand67.5%water.Ureaisacompoundofnitrogenthatturns
toammoniawhenheated.Itisusedinavarietyofindustries,perhapsmostcommonlyas
afertilizerinagriculture.Theuidisnotammable,norisitdangerouswhenhandled
normally.However,itiscorrosivetometal,particularlycopperandaluminium.Readthe
separatesectionconcerningthehandlingofDEFsolution.
DieselExhaustFluid(DEF)Handling
WhenhandlingDEFsolution,itisimportantthatelectricalconnectorstobeconnectedor
wellencapsulated.OtherwisethereisariskthattheDEFwillcauseoxidationthatcannot
beremoved.Waterorcompressedairdonothelp,sinceDEFquicklyoxidizesmetal.Ifa
connectorcomesintocontactwiththeDEFsolutionitmustbereplacedimmediatelyto
preventtheDEFsolutionfromcreepingfurtherintothecopperwiring,whichtakesplaceat
aspeedofabout60cm(2.4in)perhour.
CAUTION
Whendetachinghosesandcomponents,do
notspillDEFondisconnectedconnectors.
IfDEFisspilledonaconnector,the
connectormustbereplacedimmediately
