3.5 Checking the Rotor Windings
Prerequisites
Generator shut down
Multimeter
Procedure
Follow the procedure below to check the rotor windings.
1. Shut down the generator.
2. Remove the rear panel (a) from the generator.
3. Remove the brush holder and the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) (b).
4. Measure the resistance of the rotor winding by measuring across the slip rings.
Is 12.3–12.8 Ohms measured?
5. Check for continuity between the rotor slip rings and ground.
Is there continuity?
The rotor winding has now been checked. Continue troubleshooting by checking
the brushes.
Yes ____ No ____
Continue. The rotor winding has failed; replace the rotor.
Yes ____ No ____
The rotor has failed; replace it. The rotor winding is OK.
