Weed Eater 1700 - Spool Replacement; Drive Gear Replacement

Pull on the nylon line to change the spool
from a locked position to the operating
position. Figure 23.
Obtain correct line length by pressing tap
button and pulling on nylon line again.
NOTE: Approximately 2 inches of line can
be advanced from the cutting head each
time the tap button is pressed. Figure 23.

2. SPOOL REPLACEMENT
a. The spool should be replaced when:
1.) The square corners of the drive lugs
are rounded off, reduced In size, or
broken off. Figure 24.
2.) The drive gear Is replaced.
b. To replace the spool, follow "Cutting Line
Replacement" (page 12) omitting step "e".
3. DRIVE GEAR REPLACEMENT
a. The drive gear should be replaced when
either the square or pyramid drive lugs are
rounded off, reduced In size, or broken off.

b. To replace the drive gear, follow "Gutting
Line Replacement" (page 12) through step
"d", then as below:
NOTE: Using the spool as a tool, is the
best way to remove and install the drive
gear.
1.) Turn the spool upside down fitting the
spool drive lugs to the drive lugs on
the drive gear; turn counterclockwise
NOTE: If the drive gear cannot be
removed with the spool, grasp side
and center of drive gear with pliers or
fit the bladed end of a large screw
driver In the top opening of the drive
gear. Turn counterclockwise d. ^ .
2.) Install new drive gear using spool as
described above; turn clockwise ^ .k.
3.) Continue with "Cutting Line Replace
ment" (page 12) beginning with step
"f"
