Overview

This document describes a Westinghouse Medium Duty Commercial Stainless Steel Electric Water Heater, designed for indoor installations. It provides comprehensive information on installation, operation, maintenance, and warranty.

Function Description:

The Westinghouse Electric Water Heater is designed to heat potable water for commercial applications. It utilizes electric heating elements to raise the water temperature to a desired set point, providing a continuous supply of hot water. The system includes safety features such as a combination thermostat and high-limit control (ECO) to prevent overheating and a temperature and pressure relief (T&P) valve to manage excessive pressure and temperature. The unit is intended for use in an open or closed water system with a properly sized and installed thermal expansion tank.

    • Maximum Delivered Temp: 181°F (82.8°C)
    • High Temperature Limit: 200°F (93.3°C)
  • Electrical Specifications:
    • Rated Voltages: 208V, 240V, 277V, 480V (Single Phase - Simultaneous operation)
    • Element Wattages: Range from 4.1 kW to 18 kW, depending on model and voltage. For example, a 13.5 kW unit at 240V (3 elements) uses 4.5 kW per element.
    • Full Load Current: Varies significantly with voltage and wattage (e.g., 65A at 208V for 13.5 kW, 17A at 480V for 13.5 kW).
    • Number of Thermostats: 3
    • Number of Fuses: 6 (for 3-phase operation)
    • Number of Fuse Holders: 2 (for 3-phase operation)
  • Water Chemistry Requirements:
    • pH: Between 6.5 and 8.5
    • Hardness: Less than 7 grains (120 mg/L) for commercial use (water temperatures 140°F and greater)
    • Chloride Concentration: Less than 100 ppm (mg/L)
    • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): Less than 500 ppm (mg/L)
    • Water must be potable, free of corrosive chemicals, sand, dirt, and other contaminants.
  • Clearances:
    • Combustible materials: 0" top, bottom, sides, and back.
    • Service clearances (minimum recommended): 24" front, 3" back, 6" top, 6" sides.
    • Approved for closet installation and installation on combustible flooring (not directly on carpeting).

Usage Features:

  • Indoor Use Only: The water heater is certified exclusively for indoor installations.
  • Temperature Adjustment: Water temperature can be adjusted via a knob on the thermostat. Turning clockwise increases temperature, counter-clockwise decreases it. For temperatures above 120°F, an ASSE 1017 rated mixing valve is recommended to prevent scalding.
  • ECO Reset: In case of excessively high water temperature, the High Limit Control (ECO) will trip, breaking the circuit to the heating element. It must be manually reset after the cause of the over-temperature condition has been investigated and corrected by a qualified service technician.
  • Conversion Capability: The water heater can be converted from single-phase to three-phase operation and from simultaneous to non-simultaneous element operation, requiring specific wiring changes and documentation.
  • Installation Flexibility: Designed for installation near a floor drain or in a drain pan to mitigate damage from potential leaks.
  • Thermal Expansion Management: Requires a potable hot water expansion tank in closed water systems to prevent rapid pressure increases and premature failure of system components.
  • No External Insulation Blanket Needed: Meets or exceeds National Appliance Energy Conservation Act standards for insulation and energy factor, making external insulation blankets unnecessary.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection: Recommended to be inspected annually by a qualified service technician to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Routine Preventative Maintenance (Owner/User):
    • Monthly (or every two weeks in hard water locations): Drain a few quarts of water from the heater to flush sediment deposits and extend service life. Power must be turned off during flushing.
    • Periodically (at least twice a year): Check for leaks around the water heater and related plumbing. If the T&P valve discharges periodically or water leaks from heating elements, a system problem may exist, requiring a qualified service contractor. Check for flammable liquids or combustible materials in the area.
  • Vacation (Extended Shut-off Periods):
    • Mild/Warm Weather: Shut off electric power to the tank.
    • Cold Weather (prone to freezing): Shut off electric power, close the supply line shut-off valve, open the drain valve, and completely drain the water heater.
  • T&P Relief Valve Maintenance:
    • Annually: Operate the T&P Relief Valve lever to ensure waterways are clear. If water discharges, it indicates clear waterways. If no water flows, replacement is required.
    • At least once every three years: Inspect and replace the T&P valve if affected by corrosive water conditions or if it has been altered/tampered with.
  • Heating Element Replacement: Requires disconnecting power, draining the tank, removing the old element, inspecting for gasket type (square or circular), applying lubricant/sealant to the new gasket, screwing in and tightening the new element, refilling the tank, bleeding air, and checking for leaks before restoring power. Only Westinghouse-approved heating elements should be used.
  • Water Quality Monitoring: Regular checks of water pH are recommended (with litmus paper or chemical analysis) to ensure it remains within the optimal range of 6.5 to 8.5. Water treatment may be required if pH is outside this range or if contaminants exceed EPA secondary maximum contaminant levels.
